I'm not Catholic so I don't know much about the history of pope's, but why pick someone so old? I mean he's 78 years old..

Well I could see 60 :P A good 15-20 years sounds reasonable.. But at 78 how long does he have? Hey, he COULD live till 100 of course but in what kind of shape? Best wishes to him, though, and good luck to what he does ;)

He could well live to a 100, these popes are like superman, virtually indestructable until you shove a green rock up their ass.

Ratzinger turned 78 on Saturday. His age clearly was a factor among cardinals who favored a "transitional" pope who could skillfully lead the church as it absorbs John Paul II's legacy, rather than a younger cardinal who could wind up with another long pontificate.

The new pope is the oldest elected since Clement XII, who was chosen in 1730 at 78 but was three months older than Ratzinger.

Why Would Picking A Black Pope Be A Good Idea?

I'd Say The Best Idea Will Be To Elect A Pontiff Who Will Continue The Churches Legacy. (And Also Lets Me Into The Vatican Library .... Oh The Books To Be Read In There.)
