Hosting in public with Vbox
I'm using a 1.3.6 server on Vbox, using the host-only option, and I was wondering if there is a way to change the IP's to my local IP to be able to play with other people. I have read somewhere that it was possible to do with a router, but I don't have one, I only have a modem. If anyone can tell me if it's possible and how to do it, it would be appreciated.
Re: Hosting in public with Vbox
you only have to install no-ip
you can get it when you have an registered account at no-ip.org (hope its right)
the you get an dyn dns adress like "myserver.no-ip.org"
this adress you(and your friends) have to put this dyndns adress into the clientfile: serverfile.txt (its in /element/userdata/server/)
disable your firewall at port 29000 and 80 (i done so)
now you start the no-ip program
than start the server.
i think so it have to run.. please answer its going or not
greets germania

@germania: thanks, trying it out right now.
@hrace009: I saw that post and googled for 'port forwarding tools' but all i could find were some weird-ass programs that I couldn't understand lol.
edit: hmm the no-ip thing doesn't seem to work.

I found a port forwarding program, and I added the ports for the PW server but it doesn't work, can't open PWadmin or registration page. Can you help me with this? I have to fill in start ports and end ports, I don't know what to type there. And do I have to use my own IP adress or the Vbox one?

Re: Hosting in public with Vbox
host-only function is local only. You have to use bridged mode then it will work

Not true... I'm currently hosting my server using a host-only network, got about 10 people playing on it so it does work, but I dunno I might have some weird kinda connection that allows me to do that.
@Magik,
have you enabled network sharing on your main connection?
Try to ping a website from your vbox to check if it has connection with the internet.
Oh, and also, you need to install no-ip on your vbox to make your server public.

There isn't really any reason to necro this thread. Yes what you posted relates to the original topic but since the no one has posted since 03-25-2010 Id assume that the original question was answered or the person gave up. Hence the information isn't required.
Its probably better to add this to a guide or make a guide.

Magik doesn't need help anymore or at least doesn't want it. They haven't logged in since

I'm gonna add something however since I'm already posting. You are both correct in what you say. Virtualbox "host-only" is meant for connecting the virtual machine to the host only. However it is also possible to use "host-only" and still connect to other pc's and the internet. This can be done by using windows bridging to bridge the "host-only adapter" with your network adapter. This gives your network the same effect as using bridged mode. I initially set my server up like this before I realised the other method was less messy and easier to use.
Anyway Thread Closed.
