Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
Dunno whether you guys have the same feeling with the player. I do, but dont know why.

When we only got the Nintendo FC, we could enjoy the Super Mario all day long, even forgot food and sleep. We would gather at someone's home and try to complete each stage and to dig out each hidden element.
But when we have plenty of games now, with better graphics and complicated elements, we just try and quit, again and again. It's really so hard to find a game we could totally enjoy it, not to mention being addicted.
So we grow up and lose the passion? I don't think so! We still keep browsing the fansite, searching for the new game info. Then why? why games are not fun anymore?
My friend and I just got the basic conclusion:
1. We could not find the initial quake;
2. We start to split hairs;
3. The companies pay more attention on making money. They could never make a game really for gaming and fun.
4. In the past, we need the fun of playing games, but now we need more, such as interaction with other gamers. The feeling of belonging to a community is very important, but actually many ppl has ignored this.
5. More and more facts

Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
Oh, I remembered playing SEGA back then.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I don't think so. There are tons of addicting games you can play today like those in xbox, ps3 and facebook: COD, BF2 and FV are examples.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I find games not addicting no more. Dont know why.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
Developers concentrate on the GFX now as first priory. Previously games looked like bags of shit, but we didn't care because they made up for it by amazing gameplay and storyline.
But now, people only care about how realistic something looks. As technology has advanced, so has our expectations. We expect something to look as real as possible, yet at the same time we are still conditioned to expect the same gameplay and storyline as the older generation. But you can't have everything. As a result, we have TONNES of games which look amazing, and everyone loves them. But once you're played it then that's it. You get tired of it, and you want to move onto something which looks even MORE real!
Take Assassins Creed 2 for example.
The first game was AMAZING. It was like nothing we had seen before, and it became an instant legend. Now look at the second game. Every single aspect of it was BETTER than the first game. Except for the graphics. From an extremely obvious point of view, the second game should have been almost twice as popular as the first. But it wasn't.
Yes the gameplay and everything we used to love was BETTER, but it scored lowly with people because it used the same game engine as the first one. In that span of a few years between the 2 games, we had come to expect so much better graphics, that even though it was better in every other way, we didn't like is as much.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
Feel exactly that way
Back in time when i just got a PC with SimCity 2000 and a N64 with a couple of games i played them until i got every item, found every cave and played it again after I finished the first savegame (hey there are 3 slots. why shouldnt i use them).
But there are still some games that are like that.
For me it is "Heroes of Newerth". I play it almost every evening when i get home from work.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
we need a next generation game goddamit
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I want a strategic, point and click platformer FPS puzzler adventure horror game !
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I guess that as we've gotten older games seem less and less attractive to play since we've matured past the stage of playing games all the time (aye plenty of us do, but we mainly do it in parties with friends to talk to). Not to mention we've had so many of the same kind of games (WWII games, GTA-like games etc) and it's novelty has worn off.
However Rishwin does make an excellent point. Too many people judge a game on how real it looks. Don't get me wrong I want a good-looking game but I also want something fun. Achieving that balance to keep everyone happy unfortunately isn't a walk in the park.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
Games nowadays, evolved. It's like Music, which have evolved also (this is not pokemon), but in different concept.

Take GTAIV and GTASA for an Example, GTASA has more fun than GTAIV (Look, I don't know what others think). Also take PS1 and PS3, when we were kids, we would play PS1 the whole day, the game we were playing was Harvest Moon :). In PS3, I would play games, but only last for about what? 3-5 hours, cuz of lost of interest.
As Rishwin said, games nowadays, concentrate on every pixel of the game.

Fun has worn-off, graphics has sucked it. (Look, if you don't understand, it means that devs concentrate more on the graphics than the storyline.)

Thus you just explained Final Fantasy.
Graphics keep getting better and better, but story lines and gameplay are getting short and into less detail.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I saw this words from another site.May be it can explain why.
when you first accept it you accept it
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
The role of games is changing, changing every day.. at first it was all about entertainment and being able to do fun stuff.. now it's just how realistic it looks, and how close it is to the real world. Surely not every game goes by this, look at MMORPG's i can't think of one mmorpg that isn't fantasy, that would just kill the genre. But nowadays there are so many different games within one genre.. that you just lose sight of what you should play. And when you do decide to play a game, its just another disappointing game. How I could play MMO's 3/4 years back I can't do it anymore.. While the games role change, our priorities change too, and with our I mean people that are around since a few years :P Not people that just started discovering gaming.
I can remember how long we would play games like mario and donkey kong back then, but now after 6/7 hours of fun you either finished the game, or it just became boring and all the same.
I thought i should share my view :P
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
Bring back point and click adventure games like those off Lucas Arts back in the late 80s and early 90s !! :(
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I see you are oldy there..
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I still find games enjoyable, mostly the old ones.. you go back to them and are like " woah! I FORGOT HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS!!" i love it when that happens.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
110 hours on pokemon soul silver
400 hours on L4D + L4D2
150~ hours on Team Fortress 2
70 hours on Bad Company 2
130 hours on Killing Floor
60~ hours on Street Fighter 4
67 hours on Mass Effect
60 hours on Mass Effect 2
3500+ hours on World of Warcraft
That's just in the past year or two (or month in Pokemons case). I don't think that Video Games have become less entertaining its your approach to games that have changed over the years. When people compare todays games to the games of old, they really need to take of their nostalgia goggles and realise that yeah, games were good but the ones we have today are just as awesome.
You should try different genres of games or playing them less, you might find them more fun then. Also for multiplayer games it REALLY changes the experience if you are playing with good friends. For example, Left 4 Dead with randoms is good, but with a group of close friends it becomes one of the best games I've ever played.
If you want a list of some great old games then here's a few;
Grim Fandango
Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 / Mysteries Of The Sith
Final Fantasy 6
Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night (very pro game)
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Nearly any N64 Game
Silent Hill 2
Metal Gear Solid (1)
Monkey Island (The updated one is like <10Ā£)

Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I have a PC that can run any of the latest games, a 360, PS3, and a Nintendo DSXL, though I find myself entertained mostly out of playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game for gameboy and older gen pokemon games on my gameboy color.
Newer games are only going to be popular when they introduce something new, or have a completely unique gameplay to it. Other than that its all going to be about who has the best graphics. Though people like me who actually enjoy GOOD games will be playing Pokemon instead of leaving new PS3 games still in their plastic wrapping.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
I find it that PC games (MMORPG's most of the time) for me, are less attractive than Console games, nowadays. I used to be a complete computer-game geek.. I've played like, every god damn thing that has an advertisement on any game-related website. I personally don't own neither a XBox nor a PS3 nor any of the modern consoles. Yet when I visit friends, not only because i'm enjoying the game with them, I have more fun playing console games. It's weird.. Ohhh good ol' Diablo 1.
Re: Why Games Are Not Entertaining Anymore?
Games are aimed at making you buy them now.
You can't judge a game by it's gameplay, till you've played it.
But you can see the graphics.
so just focus on graphics, by the time people are playing it, it's too late.
Then again, I bought God of War 3 today, it's god damn amazing on both counts.
