If your goal is to have a dedicated server, linux is your only real option. I know I only use Virtual Machines for editing and tinkering; but if you actually want a product that multiple people can actually connect to and have fun, you are going to want a dedicated linux machine. Also, if we're talking enough volume of people being simultaneously connected you will also want to evaluate your internet connection. A home internet connection may be alright if you're just looking to host a hand-full of friends, but if you're looking to start a dedicated server for say 1,000 + people to connect to almost no residential internet connection will suffice and you will have to start thinking about professional serving services.
This configuration is enough?
Regarding the band of traffic, my dedicated limits in 4T, with a server consumes about 500 players online?
