Well shit... people gotta stop expecting nothing to happen. Eventually the rightful owners of the game are going to take action. They started the server knowing entirely what the consequences could be.
So lol?
They can sue her for as much as they want, they will never get that money. Ever. It's much like giving a life sentence to an 80 year old man.
She can very simply pay them $10 per week and claim it to be all she can afford. In her lifetime they will receive no more than $20,000 from her. It's not a matter of money, they know they will ever get it, they simply want to make a point and use her as an example.
She can claim bankruptcy and as such will be able to dictate exactly how much she can afford to pay them. The only exception is if Blizzard can argue a case that they will go bankrupt without that money. Which they won't. So they can't.
I was in a car accident 3 years ago without insurance and caused $10,000 in damage. I have paid it off at $20 per fortnight, and still have the majority of it remaining. Every year they send me a letter saying that if i pay off the rest within 30 days, they will take 50% off the amount i owe them. I don't care, $20 per fortnight is nothing to me, if i really had that money i'd be spending it somewhere else and continue to pay them off fortnightly.
Wait, what? Blizzard Entertainment are suing someone for copyright infringement, what did they do exactly? was it a private server..?
And tbh, there is nothing wrong with using her as an example. People open servers with the mentality that nothing will ever happen to them. Also, if I'm not mistaken, if she is a minor, the parents and/or guardians are the ones that have to foot the bill, meaning they will lose their house, vehicles etc etc. What I'm really curious about is if Blizzard can stack on jail time or convert lost payments to jail time. Maybe there are some law students here that could clarify that? I mean seriously, there has to be something, otherwise why would anyone sue a middle class citizen for 89 million dollars knowing full well that middle class citizens typically make less than 2.5 million, and that's WITH a masters degree in anything.
Because they cannot say that they lost $2.5 in sales. Their ENTIRE argument is that they lost that $89milion because people were playing WoWscape instead of playing official WoW.
They are using her as an example to say "we lost this much, we want this much, so who's next?". But no, she will not lose her house or property and neither will her family, it is basically a bill for $89 million which they have given her. She just has to sort out a payment plan.
The ONLY scenario in which she looses her house/car/property is if she is stupid enough to take out a mortgage against them in an attempt to pay that bill. In which case, the bank will take them when she can't pay. I HIGHLY doubt she is that stupid.
//Edit: No, there can not be any jail time. For that to occur, infringing on intellectual property or copyright would have to be a federal crime. Which it is not, it is a purely civil matter. That would be much like sending someone to jail for copying someone elses test answers in school.
Peyton got fucked up.
89million.. O_O..
If they really had to pay that amount?...
Wow..
Just so you know, WoWScape was making around $550,000.00 USD monthly. Not sure if you've seen this, but take a look The Graduate: Truth about Wowscape revealed after they got hacked. That's probably one of the biggest reasons it was gone after, they were HUGE.
EDIT: Point is WoWScape is a different case (many agree on this as well).
HOLY SNAP! I never realised people where making that much money! God damn!
you jealous dan? you mirin their buisness skillz dan?
u mad?
What I'd like to know is how the IRS/Paypal (or w/e company/bank they used to hold the money) didn't catch on sooner :O I mean holy hell! Half a mil in a month?!?! Thats more than most people make in 5-10 years!
Hey ladys im opening a wow server tomorrow.. lol jk
