What should i do?

well i hosted sum movies that arnt out yet for a bunch of friends 3 days ago then yesterday i recieved an email from my internet service provider and the mpaa saying there gunna take serious action against this crime im scared and dont no what to do :( i didnt really plan on this happening but im lost and im supposed to recive a phone call from my internet service provider im thinking i might scrap my hd dunno anyone help?

Well of course dud they gonna take actions on ya if you hosted movies that arent out. Only thing i can tell ya is take down the Files and delete them from your harddrive incase they come to your house and search your pc..

To be honest I don't know how you could've been so dumb, hosting things like that can have serious consequences, such as an unlimited fine. Why did you do it? Burn things to CD/DVD next time.

Anyway, the damage is done, so I suggest telling your parents (if you haven't already), removing the hosted files, switching ISP and destroying your HDD with a powerful magnet and starting over.

Don't do as Vasch said and put a magnet to your harddrive. Just format, don't burn anything because if they search your house they probably will look through your cd collection.

neither would that, they can still find it after that

the only true way to destroy your HDD is to shred the plates inside with a very large shredder. any fragments that are left still have data on them and can be recovered, even after a magenet has been near them

formatting also does nothing to stop them

Even IF you scrapped your hard drive your ISP should have all your dealings online recorded anyway, so I'm not too sure what it would help. If this is legit doing anything like that will only make you look more guilty and probably hurt you more than help you.

Anyway, my friend had the same thing happen to him, although he was just asked by the ISP to stop downloading OR actions would be taken. Luckily for him he isn't paying tons of money right now... Let's just hope for you sake someone is pulling a prank on you and maybe you'll learn something from it. I've seen people of all ages prosecuted (8 to 80), so these guys don't mess around.

whats that got to do with anything? its still the same if they catch you - this is one of the reasons i dont download films, the other being most are poor quality. when they get tougher on music im screwed

Strange, I've never heard of this happening to anyone with Rogers, but anyway the MPAA shouldn't be able to touch you, if Rogers calls you up say it was for personal use and ask them why they're violating your privacy. Post the stuff Rogers sent you if you can.

Once data has been deleted it's still on the drive like you said and it will stay there but it will be gone forever if replaced by other data, there's lots of programs that let you do this (called sanitizing). In this case though if it's just one movie you can search for a permanent deleter type program that will get rid of and replace data for where the movie was.

Rogers (which I use) doesn't keep records of anything you do online, the only thing it keeps track of is usage.

i think its happend to us.my bro has download like 1gb of illegal music and our internet as been going incredibly slow atm

many sites allow u to do this legally
also, i'm sure downloading them off p2p networks is legal.

HOWEVER, orchid is HOSTING the movie, not just downloading it, so thats why they were able to pick-up on it.

I think it was reformatting 7 times loses all data... the last time I checked as the best program could pick up anything you've had on your computer for up to the last 6 times you have formatted. (from a while back)

Hum strange I have been downloading music for years and years got somthing like 40gb mp3 collection nothing said to me about having to stop.

Learn from this event and never host movies again. If you wanna pass it onto your friends I'm sure you have CD and/or DVD writer.

Here in the Netherlands things are getting tighter for the less legal data circuit...
There's several organisations getting really bad on controlling wherever they can..
One even has a site which installs spyware-like stuff once u enter it, which monitors all of the stuff ur downloading... :S

Firstly, the amount of reformatting or 'scrubbing' you would have to do to completely eliminate the possibility of data being recovered is so extreme that it would damage your harddrive anyway. Recovery has improved constantly over the past few years, while other factors have stayed the same. Secondly, the current position of the data on the drive is not the only copy, this can vary depending on what download method/downloader/player you use (this is especially true for windows systems, with pagefile usage etc). If you don't want the data to be recovered, destroying the drive completely is the only way. If you're going to have to throw away hundreds of dollars of hardware, might as well have some fun with it... pull it apart and check out the insides, if u haven't seen inside a drive before that can be kinda interesting lol... then melt the focker down :D
