Chinese or Japanese?

After learning French and Italian, I figured I'd try to learn a language more beneficial to myself and which could contribute to my future. So I concluded one of the languages in the title would be the best for me. Chinese for the obvious reasons being one of the top spoken languages in the world, which could (though doubtfully) help me further on down the line in my career (I'm an engineer). Japanese because I plan on visiting there and I've been watching a lot more anime in the past few months, so it'd help me when watching it. The down sides for both that I've been told is Chinese words can change meaning if the correct tone isn't used and Japanese grammar is harder than English. So help me with this decision please!

I would prefer japanese because my brother did chinese and it was eh... i didnt like it but japanese i feel as it would so totally help with anime and other stuff.

I'd prefer Chinese just because all the girls I hang out with around here are mostly Chinese, so it's a ton more useful.

Japanese if you ever want to move to Japan and live like a rockstar.

Chinese - both languages are awful to learn.

When since?

Go with Chinese if you plan on speaking it in numerous countries... Japanese if you're into Anime, etc. or plan to go to Japan.

I never knew "Chinese" was a language, however if you mean Cantonese or mandarin, i'd say go Cantonese.

It's hard though, i preferred learning Japanese.

Well my understanding is Chinese is the language family that Mandarin, Wu, Cantonese etc. fall under. Most people would assume by Chinese you mean Mandarin anyway because that's the most natively spoken language in the world and they should assume that once again because I stated in my opening post that it's, "one of the top spoken languages in the world," so yeah, just to clear up any confusion, I meant Mandarin.

Chinese is simply not a language.

Chineese is hard to learn
Japanese futur and technology language ( it's useness for your work )

Iwould choose japanese :)

Mandarin is one of them...
Mandarin is by far the largest one, but the other ones are still spoken by tens of millions.

Japanese is better. If you like watching cartoons, Learn Japanese, Almost cartoons made by japanese. If I'm not mistaken ?

I guess this still needs some clarification, my last post must have been a bit tricky to understand. I meant MANDARIN. I don't know if you guys were trying to be clever or not and I'll admit I made a slight mistake when posting this thread. But couldn't you at least realise what I meant? Especially since I posted a second time quoting Hobbit explaining exactly what I meant...

Mandarin. Not that much people speak the other dialects. Hong Kong people speak Cantonese but they know Mandarin, Taiwan people speak Hokkein and Mandarin, most chinese speak Mandarin.

It's a lot easier to pick up Japanese if you manage to master Mandarin.

It's called Anime, nope, most of the cartoons are made by tokyo. When you said, 'if you like watching cartoons, Learn Japanese', it's weird. So if I like err Spongebob or Pokemon, I must learn Japanese?? You're incorrect. Pokemon if im not wrong is Tokyo.

I studied both, go for Mandarin, you can study Japanese later, Mandarin is more easier to study and it will help you in business in future.

I studied Mandarin for my business, Japanese to hang out around with girls, understand what anime/japan songs means and able to interact people in japan so i can travel there oftenly.

Hell, even Simpsons are yellow.

Yeah, someone told me a while ago it's much easier to learn Japanese (Kanji symbols in specific) if you have knowledge of Mandarin, do you speak it fluently or something? (I think I saw you post in a thread not too long ago that you are).

I probably would learn both eventually if I really liked one or the other, but I'm a slow learner when it comes to languages. An Italian girl I used to talk to a lot once told me to completely learn a language you have to immerse yourself into the culture (which is pretty hard because I rarely see any Chinese or Japanese people around where I live), and is why I was more drawn to Japanese due to watching a lot of anime.

Did you learn either of these languages online by the way?

I'd have to say I feel more passionate towards learning Japanese if I'm going to be honest, but on the other hand Mandarin seems the most logical one to pick up because it's likely to help me more in the future with my career than Japanese would. Each has it's positive sides and I'll probably try learning both eventually, I'm just unsure what I should try first.

I am a native Mandarin speaker and am fluent in Hokkien too. I'm Chinese, so aye.

Not an expert in Japanese but a lot of Kanji is based on Chinese characters, though pronounced differently.

In my opinion, learning how to pronounce those Mandarin words, knowing the tones all these would aid in learning Japanese. Of course, I'm in not position to say if it works the other way round.

If you are more passionate in learning Jap, then I say go with Jap. If you are not learning out of neccessity, then go with what you like.

Japanese imo... I guess it's just me being biased though. I honestly think to me(just a guess) that if you put "I can speak/write Japanese fluently..." will look better than "I can speak/write Chinese fluently..." on a resume/application/whatever. But that's personal preference.

Since you're bout to learn both, go for it!

China is now sitting on the top of the global economy food chain. For a further advance stage, you should buck up your Chinese rather than your Japanese. It's a good start anyway that you took your first step and start learning new languages. Trilingual is always the best, am I right, dear Asians on the board?
