So reccommend an mmo to play that isn't EVE online, ACE online or Taikodom.
And if you suggest something that's in closed beta and would take ages just to get a key for the sucker then you're clearly an idiot.

Star Wars: The Old Republic
or really
Star Wars Galaxies
You have to pay for it though Gabrielle.
Star Trek Online? You don't have to be a trekkie to enjoy it since they pretty much fucked up the canon universe in it.. but Space combat is pretty fun the only downside is you also have to do ground combat (on planets and shit) and it's really repetitive and boring.
I havn't played it in a while and there has been some major updates for it recently so i don't know if they've improved it or not.
anyway they have a free trial on steam so you might as well give it a shot.

STO is the biggest cash grab mmo of all time. Monthly sub, and one of the largest cash shops of any mmo. No matter how good the game ever could have been (it wasn't that good anyway) how it is run just destroyed any hope it had. Anyone paying to play a game where the majority of the devs time goes into designing stuff for the cash shop really needs to think about wtf they are doing. In fact I find it annoying anyone would support a company who has the audacity to do both cash shop and subscription, they don't deserve any customers.
I'm not supporting them, i cancelled my sub after a month or 2 of playing after i realised what a half-arsed game it really is.
but i've just looked at the giant c-store and i see what you mean, how can they charge that much for ingame items yet still expect you to pay a monthly sub?
when i quit i only remember there really being a ferengi and some other race that you could buy..
anyway i still stand by what i said, the space combat is/was fun.
I didn't even bother putting in my CD key, that's how annoyed I got at the beta.
As for space combat, well for one it was clearly ripped out of a flight simulator game. It wasn't even space, you couldn't go in any direction. Which meant if something was above or below you, you had to fly in spirals to get to the objectives. So very, very flawed mechanics which should not have been there. Just think how epic space combat would have been if you really could fly around people properly.
Most games I'm just indifferent over. STO however I really can't stand to think about. Why it was allowed to be released in it's state I will never know. It was clearly designed to cash in on the licence as much as possible. Very little dev work went into the main game, the missions however were pretty cool. Just a shame the quality of the game ruined it so much for me.
