It's nothing to do with MadEdit... either the file is in error (look at it as hex and compare with another... or the way you have asked it to display is... or possibly the font is corrupt on your system. (that last possibility happened an awful lot on Win 3.1, a fair bit on Win9x, a bit between NT 4 and XP, and is pretty difficult, but possible to do on Vista or Windows 7.)
It's the same as when you look at a Northern or Eastern European text file with Western European font, and you either get Black diamonds with white question marks in them, or just empty box characters, in all the places where they use an accented character that isn't available in the font you are using.
