FPS Game, Rigid World.
Hello, feels like it's time for me to reveal and show some people some screenshots of a project I am working on with a friend. The name of the game is "Rigid World".
We are making a FPS game, now don't get any illusions, it will prolly never get finished, and it's mostly for us to have fun working on a side-project for school.
Project Info
I am coding, while my friend does the graphics, and I use c++ for it, running the Irrlicht library, Bullet physics, and irrKlang for sound.
We have been working for around 9 months on it now.
My friend (Who does all the graphics in the game) is:
RaGEZONE - MMORPG server development forums - View Profile: Hamstr
Here on Ragezone :).
Plot
Plot is pretty simple, going to put a more explained storyline here later on...
IRC Channel
Server: irc.freenode.net
Port: 6667
Channel: #RigidWorld
Current progress (Images):
Some concept art that was made today:

And any feedback (continuous) is VERY appreciated since then you see the improvement as well as we go.
Current progress atm (a little at least):
- New menu, looks much better.
- Menu settings saved in config files etc, so u can change res/fullscreen etc.
- Objectives ingame.
- Added voice acting,
- Music
- Mood setting music
- Sound effects for background.
- Adding more dynamic lighting.
- Event handler for the objectives, so when you get to a certain point ingame (area in coordinates), with criteria, such as if you have accomplished previous tasks, and if you press (E for example), it will trigger stuff.
- Added subtitles for the voice acting, so if u miss something, it will be there.
- GUI, ammo etc.
- Keeping to work on story.
- More ingame content (models etc).
- Added basic multiplayer support.
- Added water meshes.
- Added printscreen function(Press f12 saves screen).
- More animated models.
- Added Shaders:
- Brightpass
- Bloom
- Blur horizontal/vertical
- Distancefields
- SSAO
- A couple more. - Added particle effects.
- And more... (Can't remember all lol)
Currently working on making a LOT more, also tweaking physics, Adding bumpmaps, Vehicles, etc...

Yea it's a decent graphics engine, a good base if u wanna create a simple game, I modify it pretty heavily but it works just fine :).
Combined with some time and effort u can make a decent game with it.

ohh :O Thanks I was looking for a good library, does it do 2D games? I can't do 3D on my crappy netBook :/

Umm, yeah you should be able to, however there are prolly some better libraries for 2D.

Awesome shit! Will you be making it like IGI.
-
Re: FPS Game, Rigid World.
Well, we do our best, you will be able to see how it looks pretty soon, were working very hard on a Demo which we hope will come out some time today or tomorrow :).
From what I can see we will have better graphics than IGI but then again I haven't played that game.
Content-Wise I am not sure either, that seems like a company-produced game, not a hobby game ^^ we do this just for fun and we don't have the resources to make a huge game.

Looks awesome. Ill gladly try it.

Thanks, the demo will be delayed since we are having the voice actor/s record more material also we have had some other reasons to why it will be a couple days late.

The "real" game might never, I'll be honest when it comes to that, it's a BIG project to make a full scale game, the multiplayer might be released some time though, and the Demo will most likely be released this week.
We will keep working after the demo though :P the goal is to work as long as we find it fun and interesting and exciting.

If you can build enough intrest and come up with a creative thing that will differentiate it then you may want to keep working. Why pass up a potential million dollar product.

Hah yeah true, we plan on keeping this project alive as long as we can and keep going.
We are planning on releasing a Demo as soon as we can, BUT we won't release it untill we are 100% satisfied with it. (Since that would be incredibly stupid ^^).
Update:
Another progress screenshot, this is our solution to how to show ammunition.

Indeed, our thought was that we would have a LOT done yesterday, but there was a complication and we didn't have time to do it (complication being we have lives, who knew lol).
So atm since we are already overdue the release date for the DEMO we can just as well make it PERFECT and then release a nice demo.
Just hope people don't think it's the next MW or something, just hope people keep in mind this IS a hobby project lol.

Well, I was mostly trying to point out that we can't make a big game like that very fast with only 2 ppl ^^. And we don't really need more people, cus well, we have so much fun together, and more ppl would ruin that, maybe..
In any case, u guys will see how good it is when we release a demo ^^.

And this is how good games are made.
Having fun doing it with no profit in mind :o
Good luck with this :) Have fun!

I agree with this, we are having loads of fun and are keeping to work on the project ^^.
We made pretty much everything that was needed for the Demo however it's a little too easy. And we are going to make it a little longer atm ^^.

Re: FPS Game, Rigid World.
Hahaha, I find it hilarious that people are asking when it will be released; for various reasons.
However, like someone else said, For making this stuff at home, It looks really good! I'd compare this to Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC. The guns look somewhat realistic, and the dumpster and road block sign both looked very good!
If you keep with this project, I'll keep giving you feedback :P

Thanks, yeah we are pretty bad at keeping posting screenshots, also there isnt THAT much of a point since one minute we post a screenshot, and it will be outdated 5 minutes later ^^.

A screenshot taken a cpl of minutes ago below.
Btw, don't mind the texture of the map around the gate etc. It's a test-texture xD looks a bit crappy, we're adding Bumpmaps etc for the textures of bigger objects.

Re: FPS Game, Rigid World.
How are the physics? Like what happens when you shoot at that barrel? Have you had multiple users in at once?

Well, the physics are very good if u ask me :P.
Say you shoot at a barrell the following will happen:
1. Projectile fires from your position in the direction you aim.
2. It hits the barrel, calculates direction/speed etc, and rotates/pushes/etc the barrel, ALSO taking into account what force is already applied to the barrel, also the bullet will richoette, losing momentum, force, speed, but still being a "force" so basically depending on how you shoot, the projectile will have a LOT of different force etc.
3. And we have been 2 players online, BUT multiplayer is put on ice since there isn't THAT much fun in making it + it's not that important to us.
4. We use a physics engine called "Bullet", a very powerful and good engine, for example used in the production in movies, such as Toy Story 3, Inception, etc. (Google it for more references).

Thanks, we do our best, we will most likely upload a video as soon as we feel comfortable with it :). (Some sort of... pre-demo video showoff-trailer-whatever).
First though before we release a Demo I am trying the game out on friends, so that we see that the tasks are... well obvious enough so people don't get stuck! ^^...

Hah, thanks mate. Yeah hopefully everyone is as optimistic as you ;).
Just a general update:
We decided to expand the Demo in general, also we decided to re-make a lot of the models to include better mapping and Bump-Mapping, which should have been done in the first place. This will mean MUCH better graphics and details. And more content as well is being added to make the Demo more fun to play.
-
Re: FPS Game, Rigid World.
:Update:
Today we are trying to make a cool looking menu and a secondary weapon (revolver). We will also be doing some more work on the GUI and in general just trying to fix some of the small issues we are currently having concerning the game.
one major thing we have done today is that we have added shader! I've been bugging Justei with doing so for ages... :P
He is currently adjusting some setting and making it possible to change resolution and turning shaders on and off.
Regarding the release of the demo... Like said before, we will be postponing the release date until we are satisfied with the product, but we are eager to get it done asap, so you can hopefully play the demo in a near future! :D

Re: FPS Game, Rigid World.
Just an update to people, I know we haven't really been updating the thread much, mostly because the development is taking up all our free time lol.
Just wanted to drop by and say that we are still working on it and if you have any questions please ask or join our IRC.
I'll be adding a update here as soon as I feel we have something we want to show you, but without spoiling anything ingame.

Also we have some more voice acting to record and fix in soundbooth, but after that we should be done with the Demo ^^.

Grenades?
Oh hell yes.
As long as I can see pieces of my enemy flying all over the place, game is good.

Haha yeah, well I've added so that you throw a grenade and it's using physics as well so depending on angle you throw it will go far/short and bounce off objects etc :P. Adding em in a vector so they have individual timers so they explode when they should etc.
Tough part will be making the animation nice, considering using particle effects with a wide spread combining fire and smoke.

Thanks, the designer made it :) (Hamstr).
I'm happy with it as well, hopefully were gonna have more and more concept art to show you guys over the coming weeks ^^.
Still workin on the demo, gonna take a while to get it fully done to a point where we wanna release it, now with me getting a new job etc I have even less time to work on it :/.

Re: FPS Game, Rigid World.
Status Update:
We havent been able to do so much recently because we are both very busy with school, the project is going forward, but it's a bit stalled at the moment, not much left for the demo to be released, but we wanna make sure it's as good as it can get.
Just so u know, we will be giving this project into our teachers on monday, hopefully we get a good grade out of what we got so far.
We will also be releasing a website where you can follow our steps as we go on with the game development. Like a facebook wall/Twitter wall.

Renders of a weapon that's in progress. (Attachment).
Were handing in our assignment (The demo) today, it's not fully finished. But it's good enough to get us an A.
We might release the demo pretty soon like this anyway if were happy with it.
So for now, enjoy these renders of the newest weapon. (It's a sniper rifle lol).

Thanks, well yeah, also we spent over 9 months working on it ^^.
FPS Creator takes no skill at all to use, we actually coded the game with the physics etc.
I'm going to release the demo openly for any1 to download soon :).
Also I wanna report that we got an A+ (Easily) when we presented this as our project at school, teachers said we had the best presentation, and the best project they had seen in years, which made us very happy to hear, we also had a great turnout at the presentation (spectators), filled the presentation room up, filled every seat :).
Hopefully you guys like it as much as our teachers/friends!
The game hasn't been developed more on since we have a LOT of school, last 2-3 weeks of highschool/college here are INSANE lol, around 2-3 tests a week isn't unusual.
EDIT: I'm also considering releasing the source of the game, however I would like to know if there is anyone here that even has any knowledge of working with c++ and graphics engine, in specific Irrlicht?
If I release it I would most likely strip the source down a lot, so that the game would mostly be the framework and the work of our company/team (Models etc) wouldn't be used by people knowing jack shit tbh.

Don't release it for free. 90% of the internet is leechers, and they will give your project a bad name. Sell it to someone who will continue the project

Selling most propobly won't be an option, since this game project was created with being free in mind :). And I intend to keep it that way, however we most likely wont continue with this engine because it's just causing trouble + the graphics aren't really up to what we actually want to achieve, for example our models are better than what the engine is capable of rendering, and more.
Most likely I won't release the source, but I might release a stripped down framework, with some built in functionality, but that's it, so people can have somewhere to start, but without hard work they won't get anything out of it...
Imagine the framework being something like the engine of a car, but you have no frame, wheels, doors, etc, you gotta get those on your own, and if you have no idea what you are doing, or have no determination, then you won't get far anyway.
