Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
So, today one of my mates graduated, so we celebrated that with his class like people celebrate in Sweden at graduation.
So then I started thinking, we have so fucking much fun graduating in Sweden, so how do other countries celebrate this?
To explain in more detail I'll explain how we celebrate here, first off we have the classical "running out of the main building" right, like all countries seem to have, you have the pretty hats and nice clothes, but what happens next I think might be a little more unique to Swedish customs, what happens is that everyone gets into the back of a big truck and the truck goes around the town, and the students party like hell on the truck.
You buy in LARGE amounts of beer, and you soak eachother down to the bone with it, and you drink some as well of course.
An example of how this custom/tradition looks is here:
YouTube - ‪Swedish graduation‬‏
look at 3:21, that's where they show how it looks, some of those are more wild, some are less, the one I was on today was insane, my own graduation will be next week.
So after this what happens is every1 goes to their homes and have a "formal" party for families etc, then you go and party again for the next 24 hours pretty much.
Now, the question is, HOW do people in YOUR country celebrate graduation? Is it individual? Do you have some ritual or tradition that the whole nation follows? Or what happens?
I'm incredibly curious tbh :).
You could actually tell us about YOUR graduation and how it looked and compare it to what the "norm" is if it was different than most graduations.
Re: Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
Well for 1) There's no beer buying unless it's for an after party, since the legal age limit is 21. Also, where I grew up, we had 2 high schools, one of them being the biggest high school on the eastern side of the US, so we kinda wouldn't have been able to get into a truck and patrol the town lol. I think it more so depends on what social group you're in.

Well, every class have their own truck, so this was in Stockholm and every highschool have a couple of trucks out, which is actually why people don't graduate the same day, to limit the amount of trucks out xD.
This school I was with today has about 3000 students, a lot of people graduated today :). So a LOT of trucks went out, you can see like 20-30 trucks a day in the center of Stockholm.

Hah, yeah, I love that tradition :P It's a lot of fun and you get to party like hell on the streets, and it's legal :D...
If this tradition isn't in your country you could start it ^^ if it's legally possible that is!
Re: Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
graduating secondary school we had a leavers assembly, and that was it.
college we had nothing.
I havent graduated from uni yet, but portsmouth has a tradition to have the photo on the guild hall stairs, and the uni colour is purple so everything will be purple too :) then obviously get utter pissed.
Re: Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
What a waste of good beer.

LOL, yeah It's a funny idea actually, and you get to party your ass off one last time with your friends before you all go your separate ways :(...
Also a short while before you graduate there is a pre-graduation party, and in the morning the same day you graduate you drink champagne, it's called "champagne breakfast"...
I thought other nations did similar things, it just today struck me that they might not :S
Re: Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
haha yeah, for me it was
Step 1) Ceremony during the day
Step 2) Go home, dress up, get ready, by 5pm
Step 3) we rode around with party busses to go to famous places to take pictures
Step 4) Arrive at the boat cruise, and party, eat.. i remember it stopped at like 5am
Step 5) You can either go home or go to some crazy after after party lol! but 90% of people danced too much that they instantly dropped after 5am lol
i was sleeping on the school tables while they were giving out prizes xD pretty sure majority of people were xD
Re: Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
here in Egypt
it is according to the school
some schools make a prom party with a band or DJ or a singer and students enjoy their time
or others make family parties
in college (havent graduted yet)
Party or singer or a trip
so boring :D

Haha, actually sounds fun too xD what I liked is that you guys seemed to have it as a class thing to pretty much enjoy eachothers company for 24h straight or smth :P...
I loved the boat cruise idea tbh, my gf had smth similar at her graduation 2 years ago, sounded pretty awesome xD...
Add the truck idea from Sweden to your setup and it would be the perfect graduation xD...
OR you could merge both and have both in a 48h MEGA graduation party, I'd say hell yeah! You only graduate once xD might as well party for 2 days :D! Not like you have school the next day xD...
Re: Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
We don't celebrate the actual graduation here, it's just a small ceremony they do in a theater hall. The whole 'Prom' thing we get over and done with at the beginning of that year.
But after the graduation the school leavers usually go on a 2-week party binge with their mates, usually renting a house or a cluster of houses out of town. Usually most of the whole year group will flock to a specific nearby town and you just end up occupying ALL of the rentals there. Each street will have about 2-3 houses full of people you know, so every night the party is at a different place, you just grab your booze and walk to down to a different house.
Go on a roadtrip, take HUGE amounts of alcohol and weed, get all of that crazy shit out of your system. It's great.
Re: Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
yea lol we'd like to do that...
but you have a type of bus specific to the UK i guess, which we don't have lol.

Pretty much how my one went.
Wasn't a huge thing, we just had a formal type thing where we dress up, and go dance (I think learning one of the slow dances was apart of the PDHPE curriculum) for a couple of hours. It was pretty terrible, and the only reason to go to the formal is to go to the after party which is basically just like a house party.

Pretty much exactly the same again, you pretty much drink from when you wake up till when you pass out for two weeks straight, shit was awesome back then, I want to do it again.
Re: Celebrating graduation in different countries differently?
In Australia we have "schoolies" which is a celebration party that goes for like 2 weeks? or something, in Queensland, its absolutely amazing.
