Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
Steve Jobs said he wanted to destroy Android and would spend all of Apple's money and his dying breath if that is what it took to do so.
The full extent of his animosity towards Google's mobile operating system is revealed in a forthcoming authorised biography.
Mr Jobs told author Walter Isaacson that he viewed Android's similarity to iOS as "grand theft".
Apple is suing several smartphone makers which use the Android software.
According to extracts of Mr Isaacson's book, obtained by the Associated Press, Mr Jobs said: "I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war on this."
He is also quoted as saying: "I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong."
Sour times Apple enjoyed a close relationship with Google prior to the launch of the Android system. Google products, including maps and search formed a key part of the iPhone's ecosystem.
At that time, Google's chief executive, now chairman, Eric Schmidt also sat on the board of Apple.
However, relations began to sour when Google unveiled Android in November 2007, 10 months after the iPhone first appeared.
In subsequent years Apple rejected a number of Google programs from its App store, forcing the company to create less-integrated web app versions.
Android has subsequently enjoyed rapid adoption and now accounts for around 48% of global smartphone shipments, compared to 19% for Apple.
But its growth has not gone uncontested. Apple has waged an aggressive proxy-war against Android, suing a number of the hardware manufacturers which have adopted it for their tablets and smartphones.
Motorola was one of the first to be targeted, although it is Samsung that has borne the brunt of Mr Jobs' ire.
The South Korean firm is currently banned from selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Australia and Germany because of a combination of patent infringements and "look and feel" similarities. A smartphone ban is also pending in the Netherlands.
Samsung is counter-suing Apple for infringing, it claims, several wireless technology patents which it holds the rights to.
Defence mechanism Patents blogger Florian Mueller, who has been following the court cases closely, said Apple would be conscious of its past, where other companies exploited some of its early ideas.
"If Apple doesn't want the iPhone and iPad to be marginalized the way it happened to the Macintosh at the hands of the Wintel duopoly, it has to use the full force of its intellectual property to fend off the commoditization threat that Android represents," he told BBC News.
Mr Mueller - who has previously undertaken consulting work commissioned by Microsoft - was also critical of Eric Schmidt's dual role at the time: "The fact that Eric Schmidt stayed on Apple's board while he was preparing an iOS clone was an inexcusable betrayal of Steve Jobs' trust."
Mr Schmidt resigned from the Apple board in August 2009. He was later quoted by Bloomberg as saying: "I was on the board until I couldn't stay on the board anymore."
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
His eagerness and greed to beat Android and use all the dirty tricks he could find to do so is what killed him imo.
Maybe he'd still be alive if he didn't get himself so worked up over Android beating Apple.
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
I loved both of this products.
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
apple tried to be a Monopoly over smart phones
/fail
now they are crying about it
and android is in no way the same as iOS, iOS is a closed system, Android is Open Source. How is that stealing? Because they took an idea one step further?
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
Android looks nothing like Shitty iOS. Maybe a few key things like the application menu and the shortcuts.
Steve i hope you have signed the 40 billion dollars away to fight android, cause your company will lose it. Look at your measly market share 19% compared to androids 48% ^^.
Did steve jobs really think the iphone would dominate the market forever?
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
I just go my iPhone 4S by UPS It's better than my old Android.
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
lolwut?
The true side of Steve will probably be revealed in this biography.

If anything it should be Symbian and/or Windows Mobile be complaining since Android killed them both.
In all fairness, pretty much everything in Android was copied from others, but like I said in the other topic, everyone copies from everyone and finding something new and original is nearly impossible.
All this shows is that Apple/Jobs really thought the world was all about them/him.
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
Why is it that Apple is always the ones that are suing it's competition?
When apple was nearly out of business, Microsoft gave them an endowment of 25 million (or something like that) for a partial share of apple profits. Now apple is suing microsoft in multiple law suits. Now they are against google by suing all the manufacturers who are going forward with the open source os. And sadly even sansung which they soley depend on for many of their hardware.
Also I like how last week it was all "R.I.P steve", emotional etc
one week later it's "steve, you fucked up"

RIP out of courtesy, but he is a poor business man and just got lucky off of a few ideas.
Just like you said he asks and accepts help when he needs it, but when the people who helped him threaten the success of his business he doesn't hesitate to sue them.

It seems that over the past few years that android has done more damage to Symbian imo.
Since Android has launched it seems to have just eaten into both iOS and Symbian's usage.
Symbian has lost about 12%
iOS has lost around 10%
Android has gain around 22%
That is just the stats to show which browser's seem to be used online but it's a decent judge of how the usage of these devices are going.
Honestly, I'd prefer looking at those stats compared to "total devices sold" for each phone as you get into problems such as people buying every model of the iphone.
That does not really show the actual usage, ie arguments such as "more sold overall = most people use x" etc
Also, OT but I chuckled that more people still use Vista than MacOSX online.
Crash
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
Symbian was so shit compared to the iOS or Android, I don't know about overseas but in Australia it seemed like the majority of people who owned a phone would have a Nokia which run Symbian, it was pretty terrible compared to the iOS or Android and once people saw there was a nice alternative they switched.
Symbian killed itself.

Almost sounds that they only get their iPhone's for the showing offs and/or for support.

Windows Mobile lost almost all real users to Android, mainly because of being able to tweak it and all. While WM wasn't open source, in reality it pretty much was since you had access to the registry, pretty much all components could be tweaked etc.
The same goes for Symbian of course.
Re: Steve Jobs vowed to 'destroy' Android
I used to be pro-apple before getting my android device. I don't believe the arrogance in his words. He's calling Android "Grand Theft" but look at all the iOS5 features compared to froyo, hmm.. Other way around?
