Newegg is great

So i ordered some RAM, then an hour later Newegg says my payment billing details were invalid. After some backwards & forwards with their live chat, i told him to just cancel it.

2 hours later i check my Credit Card statement online, and lo and behold there's a charge from Newegg.

I'm now waiting for the "Accounting department" to review this and refund me my money, even though they can't process my order because my payment details are apparently "invalid". So they charged me for something they can't send me because they can't charge me.

Yea, makes alot of sense. Fuck Newegg, i am never using them EVER again.

walmart did the same thing, i ordered stuff and they said my shit wouldnt go through....

so i checked my account, moved some money from my with my phone, and i slid my card again, checked my account when i got home and had 2 charges with the same amount in a 3 minute time frame,

then i went back there and they said i would have to wait 3 days for the money

this was on the 18th, now its the 21st.....3 DAYS

i went back today and the lady said
"o it takes 3 working days"

i was like when isnt friday a working day? i like walmart but thier customer service is fucked up

I'm Canadian so I use NCIX but they are also in America.

I prefer NCIX tbh.

It's not newegg, it's the cheap (read: never updated, made once about 20-25 years ago) payment gateway APIs that tend to fuck up from time to time on basic shit (I've had AT&T tell me my payment with my CC that I use to pay EVERY SINGLE BILL could not be approved for a purchase, but if I call them and they run it manually, it works, and I've worked on these systems where operators running the gateway software @ visa etc say "just try it again, it doesn't always work").

If the charge goes through but they don't get a confirmation token, they don't mark it in their database as a sale. The charge should clear itself from your CC since they have fairly intelligent reconciliation software that detects half-duplex payments like that and removes them. If it doesn't, just ask your bank to fix it. And if it's a real hassle, bother a Newegg manager and they'll probably give you a credit as compensation.

yea it looks good, prices arent too bad, but you really have to look.

Similar thing happened with me trying to order a halloween costume for my girlfriend. Its not newegg, like merlin said these guys are using crappy CC processing APIs. Sometimes they charge you, THEN check if the billing info is valid.

My tip is to use newegg for browsing, then buy Amazon Prime (or get it free if you're a student :thumbup1:) and get free 2 day shipping on everything backed by Amazon's great reputation.

I'm assuming you paid with a debit card. Refunds from a debit card can take up to a full work week to process.

Use a credit card. There is a reason why sites ask for your "credit card info" and not your "debit card info".

The sad thing is that creditcards are not needed at all for these payments.
It's true that it takes a while for debitcards to process, but here in the Netherlands we use a system that basically tells the receiver that the money has been send, which is all that our shops need.

Fact is that 90% of the people here don't even have a creditcard, those that do usually do this to buy from other countries. The creditcard industry simply needs to go away.

It's an Australian Pre-paid credit card, their company policy is they can not accept any card which wasn't issued by an American banks.

So even though it went through, they still had to "deny" me the sale.

What the fuck.

Hm, just a special circumstance they never prepared for I guess.

Funny, same thing happened with me and a clothing store online (American Eagle), they said they couldn't verify my billing information, as well as shipping details, however, they still charged me for an 'invalid' purchase.

I shouldn't forget to mention it took almost 2 months for me to get my money back.

I suggested that. They said "No, it has to be issued by an actual American bank". So no pre-paid cards are accepted at all.

My Pre-paid card can be used anywhere in the world, there are no "billing details" actually associated with the card, so if i wanted to i could put the address for the White House or the World Trade Centers or even the Pentagon, and it will still go through without a problem. Because on file there is no address to compare it against, so any address works.

I told them exactly that but they still said "too bad".

Newegg is great. I've given them over $15k worth of business over the past 6 years myself and have probably passed them that much business from referrals. I have never, ever had a problem with the products I've ordered. I've also never had to deal with customer support.

Customer service issues can happen though to anyone, any business. You have to look at the trend and not just one specific event. For example, in fast food, maybe one day you get a staff member who is just having a bad day and offer your crappy service and food. Does that mean you should never order food from that business again? No. It just means you had one bad experience. If you choose to give them more chances and they keep messing up, that is another issue though.

When it comes to ordering from places like NewEgg or other online retailers, you have to separate "NewEgg" from all their 3rd party dependencies that are not a part of them. For example, there are a lot of people who have problems with UPS shipping and blame that on NewEgg. NewEgg has no control over UPS so those people are blaming the wrong person. When it comes to financial issues like you are having, there's only so much NewEgg can control in that process.

In your case, it's pretty much what jMerliN said. Take a look at this: Verified by Visa Forces Users to Select Weak Passwords. When I order with my bank, I run into similar issues as brought up in that article. The relevancy of that article and your problem is the flaws in the payment gateways as jMerliN mentioned. You can run into these issues anywhere, not just NewEgg.

Also, when it comes to your problem, I'm not sure the story behind you using an Australian pre-paid card here in the states, but you have to understand how messed up our financial system is and all of the recent legislation changes that force companies not to be able to accept certain payments for whatever reason. obviously, a lot of fraud can take place with foreign issued cards, so take this as a lesson learned to check up on company polices first before thinking everything will be fine.

Anyways, this is just something that can happen when shopping online. If you want to avoid all these issues, shop in store, but even then you are subject to another set of issues such as CC security or phantom charges from the store. You also end up having to pay more in store + taxes, but if you are not used to online shopping and just need something, I guess whatever you can get by with.

While I am a strong supporter of NewEgg, I would second Ron's post in getting Amazon Prime for $80 a year if you are a heavy shopper. The biggest drawback to NewEgg is shipping costs, so if you can find what you need on Amazon Prime, you can get it much, much cheaper. I've also given Amazon over $10k worth of business for computer stuff, movies, music, and tons of other stuff and have never had a problem.

I just may be lucky though, because I talk to some people who always have trouble no matter where they shop. :rolleyes:

No, it is most definitely a problem with NewEgg.

As far as I've encountered, they are the ONLY online store I've found that specifically only accepts Credit Cards from American Banks. Every other online store i've used has never had issues with my card; Amazon, Steam, Dell, FedEx, JetBlue, Holiday Inn, Staples, the list literally goes on... Every one of them has either accepted my card outright, or accepted it with an initial refundable deposit because it's a prepaid. Absolutely none of them have actually DENIED my card.

So this has nothing to do with their payment gateway, this is simply NewEgg's stupid policy.
