I drive a new Mustang.. I plan on using it during the winter. It's rear wheel drive.
I was told to put lots of sand bags in the trunk for traction. How many should I put?
I bought 2 bags of kitty litter, 10 pounds each. I plan on buying 2 more tomorrow, so there will be 2 above each tire (in the trunk). Will this suffice, or will I need more?
This is not a thread to bash me for driving a Mustang in the winter.
If someone bashes you for driving a Mustang, you ask them what car they drive. And if they say a toyota...

About the actual topic though, I have no idea.
You need way more weight then that. You'll want at the very least a couple hundred pounds.

I have no idea why anyone would tell you that. The mustang has more then enough weight to hold traction, all you're doing is reducing your fuel economy.
There are only 2 things which will help you:
1. Winter tires
2. Driving safely
If you're losing traction, it's because you're accelerating too fast.

More weight = more momentum = less braking ability.
It's SAFER to go easy on the gas pedal then it is to drive with a few extra hundred pounds of weight. Especially for a YOUNG driver with minimal experience.
Doesn't matter if your car weighs 2,000 pounds or 5,000 pounds, black ice will send you sliding just the same. Except the latter will move further and with more destructive force.

Most Mustangs are rear wheel drive. So no matter how slow you try to accelerate you have almost zero traction.
Yes adding 200-400lbs will give you worse gas milage, but it's a necessity if you want to get around.
Everyone puts more weight in their rear wheel vehicles during the winter.
Some states don't allow the chains on your tires, so you'll need a couple-hundred pounds worth of sandbags in your trunk, if that's the case.
Even if you hit ice, you'll still go sliding, but in less severe conditions your car will run somewhat more smoothly.

When it snowed earlier this year in Dallas I did not use chains nor did I put any weight in my trunk for traction. All you have to do is not drive like an idiot. Sandbags are really not required; I drove through the snow every day to get to work. However, when you hit a big patch of snow, it doesn't matter if you have sandbags or not. You're going to go sideways regardless.
I'm not saying sandbags don't help, because they do. I'm just saying if you're trying to drive like you do on a non-snow day then you're going to have a lot of problems lol. You have to accelerate way way slower. Just a bit slower isn't enough. I'm talking let the clutch move your car a bit then very slightly press the gas.
Honestly if you live in an area where you get snow on a daily basis, you need to get chains. If it snows a few times a year then sandbags will be fine, even though they really aren't necessary.
Yeah where do you live? That's probably the first question that should have been thrown out there. My experiences are from growing up in South Dakota, and now living in Minnesota. We get a LOT of snow...
If you're living in the more coastal/southern states you wont need much weight in the back. I was just assuming you lived in a place with a lot of snow beings you asked the question.
