Running a PW private server on windows
I've seen threads about this, and I still have a few questions.
Why exactly can't you run one windows, isn't there any emus that allow you to run linux on windows?
Is it possible to run a non-public server on windows? ( So that I could just play by myself, test things out, and learn how to do things before I go and buy a whole new operating system)
How much actual knowledge do I need of programming to run a server? I don't have any experience or knowledge in any of these types of fields, but you've gotta start somewhere, right? I'm willing to learn some things; I just need to know what.
Where exactly can I get the basic server everybody starts off from?
Thank you in advance, and if you have any tips for a beginner, feel free to post it here. I need as much help as you guys have to offer.

Re: Running a PW private server on windows
You cannot run them on Windows because they just weren't built for windows - they will not work
However, you do not need to go buy a new operating system or a server because linux is free/open source (mostly)
Yes, you can run it on your windows computer with something called virtual box or vmware, basically it lets you run another operating system inside your current system.
You shouldn't need much/any programming knowledge to start a server, just ragezone, google, common sense and a brain :)
To start your server off, I would reccomend downloading virtual box and using this guide: http://forum.ragezone.com/f694/compl...ackage-736572/
Let me know if you need any help

Because the binaries were compiled for Linux and we don't have the source. Yes you run Linux on Windows. There are Virtual machines like virtualbox and vwmare that you can use.

Yes. You can even run a public server in a virtual machine on Windows though its not recommended. Linux is a free operating system. You don't have to buy it in most cases unless you get something like RedHat.

None at all. You can follow any of the guides here and setup a server without any programing knowledge at all. You will need to a bit about networking to set up. Later on if you do decided to run a public server you will need to know so you make your server secure.

My advice to you would be to download 343's release and have a play. Explore everything and get to know the files well. I wouldn't recommend running a public server until you know about the files so you can run it properly. Make good friends with google. Most of the information you need is already out there. You just have to find it and use it.
Have fun :)
