1)¿What is 1337 Speak?
Elite speak 31337, or 1337, started back then in the Age of the BBSs (they were like private ISPs). You connected to them and you could send menssages, chat and play multiplayer Doom, etc…. In some BBS they started to use words filters for words like “porn and hacker”, so they started to exchange letters for numbers (like “pr0n and haxor”) to avoid that filter. So the word “Elite” changed to leet and then to 1337 in a heartbeat
2)1337 Speak
1337 speak is a way to express that you are more Pro or 1337-er than the rest of the world. That was before =/. Now writing in 1337 is a relatively old and it´s used just to screw around. No one really writes in 1337 anymore, at least if you don´t want to be teased about it or if you know that the rest of the people around are total n00bs .

Originally dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer mispelled "Own" as "Pwn". What was originally supose to be "player has been owned." was "player has been pwned".
Pwn eventually grew from there and is now used throughout the online world, especially in online games.
