BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
Alright before I get infracted because of this; I'd like to state I'm not posting this as a News thread. I'm posting it as an informatory post to let others know of what is happening with the Internet.
I just got another E-Mail from fightforthefuture.org and this one says;
Quote:
On Jan. 18th there is going to be an all-out strike on the internet. Websites across the internet are going dark in protest of the internet censorship bills in Congress, SOPA and PIPA.
Some of the biggest sites in the world are participating: Reddit, Mozilla. And some others may join (e.g. a leading micro-blogging platform and a popular collaboratively-written encyclopedia), but they need a nudge. If we can get them to join this will be EPIC.
Ask the biggest sites on the internet to join the strike.
If you're on Facebook or Twitter, please share this aswell.
Thank You!

A lot of big sites are going to be going down in protest of SOPA and PIPA; it seems as if we are finally taking somewhat of a stand against our Handlers! Let's hope all goes well and this stops SOPA once and for all..
Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
I just signed up to it, and suggested that google should strike. I BET that congress will go "hold on, ill google that" and then wont know what to do, because google will be striking!
Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
I'd love to help but I have couple of questions :

What does "going dark in protest" mean? And what is "striking" about in the internet?
Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
Going dark means they're turning their servers off for a day I believe

Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
I don't think any major companies would participate.. One day being down could lose a lot of money?
Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
Better to fight and lose 1 Days worth of money than to not fight and be shut down completely.
Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
1 days money is nothing compared to what they might lose in the future.

Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
I'm not sure what they intend specifically by 'going dark'.
The participants could do a multitude of things.
1 - Turn off website (bad idea).
2 - Redirect their website to the anti-sopa page.
3 - To put it in lamens terms, overlay the anti-sopa page on their website, and either make there no (simple) way to remove it, or put a close button in that would bring them to the normal site.
I'm sure there are other methods that sites can think of as well.
Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
Think my internet/isp is pre-excited for this event my net goes "dark" for days and comes back, I try to ask questions and see what the problem is.. but nope it just turns into an argument and I end up breaking the router.
Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
Turning down their website for 24 hours could do a lot of changes, if they ARE willing to do it. Timebomb suggested the "redirect to the anti-sopa page" which is not a bad idea either.
Re: BREAKING INFORMATION: Web Goes on Strike!
Google lost millions of dollars when they went offline for 2 hours, you think they'd go offline for 24 ?

That's where a pop-up with an option to close it on Google's homepage would be a better alternative. They might lose a few million dollars from people thinking "Pop ups? Fuck that shit" but not as much in comparison to blacking out for 24 hours or as Dell said, the consequences of this legislation being passed.
I suggest RaGEZONE blacks out!
