I has read about it long time ago. I remember that you must open you port, and something to you friend to access you server. It working if ur friend on you LAN !!
It doesn't have to be on your own computer. You can... but you would have to keep your computer on, in order to to keep the server on. (meaning it has to be on 24/7) This isn't that good for your computer. I recommend you to search for a good VPS and run the server there.
Just look at some tutorials. If you want it to run on your computer just do everything the tutorial section told you.
