Would this be okay to run PW?
Re: Would this be okay to run PW?
As has been stated many times in these forums, it is not advisable to run with any less than 16 GB of ram with all maps up. Other than that, it should be more than enough.

I want to move the server off my computer. Everyone tells me you need alot of ram to do this(even though ive been running in VMware with 256mb perfectly fine O>O). They say it has to do with more maps or something. So would this set up be okay to run it?
i would recomended you to run in under CentOS / Red Hat
would be nice if run using 32GB RAM. to run all map

Also we do not plan to run every map. So will this do?
If you're not planning on running every map, yes (you'll be fine). If you were planning to run every map simultaneously HRACE hit the nail right on the head (you would want NO less than 16GB, but the recommended would be 32 GB)
Re: Would this be okay to run PW?
I was running a server with 8 GB RAM. Had ~ 400 MB left when i had all maps started so i gave it 4 gig of swap and all was fine. We had no problems with that config at any time even when 50 or more players were online. Sure, when you add custom stuff ( especially maps ) you will need more RAM.
With the new files, i dont know. Didnt test em.
Re: Would this be okay to run PW?
I use 12gb ram and we recently did a stress test with 1.4.4, we had all maps open with like 0.05 ram left. So...
Are you going to run 1.4.4 or 1.3.6? Big difference.
Re: Would this be okay to run PW?
Debian works just fine for a pw server. Been running with it for like 3 years now. Ubuntu is a bit more bloated with useless stuff but it's still a debian base so it should work too. Don't forget 32bit libs if you're planning to run on a 64 bit system.
Re: Would this be okay to run PW?
If you will be doing this long-term, I would suggest getting your own hardware (200~500USD from EBAY) and colocate it (35~50USD) than renting out a 150USD dedicated server a month.

Re: Would this be okay to run PW?
VPS is no good, you're looking for dedicated
Re: Would this be okay to run PW?
VPS is ok for testing. As long as there are not more than 50 players it will make no difference ( !!! If you dont get a vserver somewhere without a ficed amount of RAM and bandwith usage, then t will be no good at all if another vserver owner starts big things on his server !!! ). If you plan to have more than 50 players from the beginning directly use a real dedicated machine. Like fluxbox said, use an own PC ( I just bought a 19" Server machine in ebay for 30 €, thats ~ 40 US$ and gave it 8 gig of ram ) and look for datacenters where you can rent a place to build it in a rack. This saves a huge amount of money.

This is called co-hosting/co-location (and yes, they have it all over the place)...
I do not think this is necessarily a good idea either, especially if you're talking 144 (136 not such a big deal)...
Colocation Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Tallhassee, Tampa
There's just one example I found googling for it (took me 2 seconds to find) :ott1: (chances are I'm guessing they have a location somewhere near you, or ofc you can find your own as far as 'price shopping' or looking for the closest location etc)...

I live in Asia and I have a colo in Kansas. Bought my hardware from EBAY, shipped it directly to them. This is just an example, you can do this too in other countries where colo is available.

I personally like Single Server Colocation | Hivelocity Hosting - Dedicated Servers - Linux Dedicated Server - Windows Dedicated Server - Dedicated Server Hosting
