[PC] Camera Styles in MMO's
Regarding a solo indie MMORPG project, i want to know what camera styles people enjoy using in today's games.
here is a list i'm willing to implement into my game with the right votes.
The Game engine is Unity3D and Smartfox for networking.
The games mentioned are to give you an idea of what the camera is like.
Isometric Camera
First Person/Third-person Camera
Third-person + no targeting
i want to know what camera styles are popular with the average MMO player, this is more of a research opportunity rather than actual implementation according to votes.
Thanks, 3:01/Jiro
Re: [PC] Camera Styles in MMO's
I would say 3rd person is most popular because there are way more mmorpg games than mmofps.
Also I dont see a reason why they cant make it switchable from first to 3rd to whatever

Most games support that actually, just zoom all the way in and you'll go first person.
Re: [PC] Camera Styles in MMO's
I've always liked the 3rd person view. But isometric isn't that bad at all. It will most likely come down to a choice of preference depending on how the game plays itself out.
Re: [PC] Camera Styles in MMO's
I wonder how is it like to play MapleStory in first person.
It depends on the genre/group/type of games you're trying to publish, and also, have a brainstorm with a few friends regarding the game you're developing, is it more eye-comfortable for it to be in FP or the isometric view. So no personal opinions here, it all depends.
Re: [PC] Camera Styles in MMO's
Third person is really the only option if you want a decent amount of players. The only reason to use isometric was because the tech to do 3D was too expensive. Now that tech is cheap, no new game should really use that style, unless its for artistic reasons. If you can do proper 3D, use it.
Also make sure the zoom distance is high, or let players change it in their settings. Nothing makes me quit a new game as fast as a short camera distance. If I wanted a short camera distance, I'd set it to shorter! Just a small pet peeve I have with some game devs.
Likewise on the UI. I know you want to believe you know best for your players, but I doubt your players will agree. Let the players customise their own UI.
The more you let a player customise, the more invested they become in your game. I still miss my WoW UI in every new game I play. Its the biggest thing I miss from WoW.
