A new generation of MMORPGs have started to hit the gaming market, most of them very exciting.
We've seen Tera, with aim attack and dodge moves, but critics have been made that it still copies over games too much such as WoW and Aion, and doesn't really try to do anything that differently, which isn't bad if you are happy the way your typical MMORPG plays.
We've seen The Secret World, which is one of those games that move away from the Everquest and WoW model and tries to offer players a different and a unique experience in interactive video entertainment, much like Pirates of the Burning Sea, for example.
We've then got Planetside 2, FireFall, WildStar, and plenty more new and exciting MMORPGs either pushing the genre into new directions, or going back to the old days and making retro, old-school looking games (which is super awesome if you're a big fan of pixels like I am!)
These are indeed very exciting times, as we all know that MMORPG gamers who have been around for a long time do get bored of repeating the same, mind dulling actions in games that claim otherwise by putting a new scenario in front of our eyes.
One of these is Guild Wars 2, a high quality and highly anticipated sequel to the very successful Guild Wars. Like its predecessor, you purchase the game once and then play as much as you wish to, with no monthly fees.
I have been checking this game out in depth, and I must say that, overall, its very, very... er, very very. Much.
Having launched a few days ago, this is what the game currently features:
5 Races
- Humans
Your typical muscle-bound bloke, and your not so usual supermodel sex goddess.
- Norns
Do I smell some Skyrim influence here? I sure do, and I like it! Like humans, except they are Nords living up in the cold, icy mountains. Oh, and they can shapeshift.
- Charrs
Huge humanoid felines with horns, teeth, and not to be messed with. I think this race will make cat, tiger, and general feline lovers happy.
- Asuras
If you're not too much into cats, but more into highly advanced alien-like E.T.s of small sizes, this is the race for you.
- Sylvaris
My personal favourite, these are humanoid plant-people from the forest. Having seen their homeworld ingame, I can already tell you that there is some big Avatar influence going on here, except you're more of a greenish people rather than a blueish people. And yes, you get a tree trunk for a dick as a male character, and some finely crafted wooden parts as a female character. The choice is yours!
8 Classes/Professions
Note that every class have a variety of different skills that apply to different weapons, as no class sticks to 1 single type of weaponry.
- Warrior
Perfect if you enjoy heavy armour, bigass weapons, and charging straight into combat. Includes buffs, heals, and some ranged weapons.
- Ranger
If you're more into dealing damage from a distance whilst keeping a steady aim, as well as having a pet of your choice to fight by your sides, this is for you.
- Elementalist
An all time favourite. Spellcaster/Wizard/Magician class who uses the powers of water, fire, wind and earth to blow shit up.
- Guardian
High defence, heal spells, buff spells, de-buff spells, both extremely useful in PvE and in PvP. If you're more of a team player and like to look after your party, this is the class for you.
- Thief
Dexterity. Invisibility. Back Stabbing. A really awesome class altogether, if you're into the whole ninja thing.
- Necromancer
Spellcaster/Wizard type class with very, very interesting spells and abilities that very much differ from the elementalist. This is basically more of a witch class with the use of black magic. Satan would be pleased, I think.
- Mesmer
Once again, a wizard/fighter class combination who uses illusion type spells to trick and deceive enemies during battle. Plenty of cool spells to have fun with.
- Engineer
Your turret/rifle/explosives wielding class, promising some very unique aspects to the way you play and develop this type of character class.
Other Game Detains and General Information
- Superb character customization without going to nuts on the sliders. Guaranteed that no other character will look exactly like you!
- Choose your own background story, things such as which god/goddess gave you a blessing, where you were raised, what type of personality you character has, and other things as such which will come out in the game as you progress with that character.
- Dynamic events, which are a series of triggered events based on how players respond and what they achieve, or fail to achieve, when these events take place. These can be things such as monster invasions, sieges, lack of town resources, etc.
- No more Tab+Skill Number attacks, much like Tera, its more about aiming, moving, evading, and skill-chain combining, all in real-time, of course.
- Your typical dungeon quests (high difficulty, this needs a strong party or a guild) and your typical World VS World events, where players from different servers can compete on the battlefield.
Discuss the game :P: As soon as I come home from vacation, I'm installing this and playing it after smoking up some of that good ol' ganja.
