Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
BBC News - Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
This has right pissed me off! I prefer msn over skype. Skype is good for calls and video, but the IM is no where near as good as msn imo. The offline messages do not send unless you are both online, thus illiminating the point of offline messaging. Sending files through MSN is greatly easier and better than Skype.
I concider Skype to be a more personal wawy to communicate with family in Finland and the states.
What are your thoughts?

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
I must say that I'm a bit upset because I use MSN to contact a fair amount of people that I might not want to have on my Skype.

This is exactly the same for me. I just feel that they are closing msn, just because they want people to use Skype instead. Its all about money, rather than the loyalty of their users. Skype has the option of multi video chats, but you have to pay for them! That is the only thing that I could consider as better, but I cant, as it isnt even free.

I think so too, however I do see the good thing in trying to focus their efforts on one service, but just closing the other down like that isn't a good way to go. The userbase for MSN is way too big to just close it down, I'm going to loose contact with a TON of people because of this :/.
Also, Skype has been doing well on its own so far. I don't see why they would need to close MSN so abruptly.

Been talking to a few friends and aparently they are going to transfer all accounts over to skype. Not sure how they are going to do it, as skype uses a username, and msn uses an email, but hey. So long as I have all my contacts.
Also, aparently they are going to impliment msn into skype over time. So its pretty much going to turn into msn anyway.

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
What's even more lame is i synced them by mistake and you can't UNDO IT without contacting them...

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Eh, the only reason I've been using WLM lately is because I still have a few people I talk to on there that don't have Skype.
I have grown to prefer Skype. I prefer the instant messenger features, especially the ability to edit/remove recently typed messages. The UI is better, the voice and video chat is obviously a lot better. So I don't have much of a problem with this.

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
If Microsoft goes through with this, then they'll be loosing millions of dollars, while gaining a one off payment for selling out WLM. But the one thing I'm confused about is, are they selling out there whole 'Hotmail' service (Sign In) - If so, then that's just, f**ked! But I don't know why they would do that, Skype is already going good enough with also being linked to Facebook! Selling out WLM to Skype is pathetic, at least link it, not sell it! Why would they do this, with all do respect to Microsoft?
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
I hate Skype and the thought of having people I don't know on a personal network like Skype makes me angry. I use WLM to keep in touch with people I don't personally know and it needs to stay like that =/
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Skype reveals your IP like the cunt it is, fucking annoying shit.
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Skype as we know it now, is still a product from Skype itself, MS hasn't done that much yet with the client so far, so I'm guessing they will be integrating all the features of WLM into Skype. On top of that since the WLM service will be going down, they will be able to use the servers to improve Skype, giving everyone a better experience.
It simple makes no sense for MS as a company, to be having 2 kinds of communication networks and since they will be trying to make Skype the standard for all communication on smartphones, it makes sense they are forcing people to use Skype making it bigger and better.
So yes of course it is motivated by money, but can you blame them? WLM has been losing more and more interest, less and less people use it and when they still do use it, they hardly use to actually communicate with people, mine WLM is always on, but I think I had 1 conversation on it the past couple of months, whereas I use Skype every single day.
I'm definitely looking forward to ditching WLM, nostalgia will not sadden me, however a improved Skype client and network will make me happy.

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
I like MSN way more than skype. I use it for near enough everything, contact and even if I'm bored playing chess with people from the games menu of it. Damn it.
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
It is more then likely that Skype will introduce such activities as chess. Remember, even though the offer on Skype by MS was a long time ago, they haven't owned it for that long, so I'm sure with this choice they are probably going for a whole new client.

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Fuck Microsoft. Seriously, fuck them, every decision they seem to make these days pisses me off.
If I wanted to speak to someone, I will use skype or TS or fucking phone the person frankly. I use msn for general chatting like everyone else. I don't want people to be able to phone me most of the time. Seriously it's the difference between watching live TV with no DVR, and watching a DVD. You can pause it whenever and go afk, or just be doing other things. Because who uses msn as their only running program? Skype just takes too much of the users time imo.
Just sigh, microsoft.
So what's our open source alternative guys? Because clearly microsoft is attempting to Seppuku.

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
I do not know a single person, not one, who still uses MSN. What good is a dedicated IM service in a world where every 2nd program on the market has an IM'ing feature? Good riddens TBH.

Then you obviously have a small friend base.
I use WLM on about 99% of all my friends and clients. Its easy to use I can set things how I want. I detest skype , the service is subpar the usability is just crap everything about it is half assed.
Skype is a video calling program not an instant messenger. If I wanted to make a video call I would use skype if I want to chat I will use WLM. If I want to video call and chat I will use WLM. I really dont see the move to skype as its a DOWNGRADE from WLM that has a far better service and does what skype does and more. The only thing lacking on WLM is a proper user interface to match the times

That's probably because you replaced it with something else?
I have yet to find something else that allows me to speak to friends I've made on different games. What alternative is there? Facebook is too personal (though I have 1 or 2 on there, not to mention RZ), steam messenger is shit and most mmos aren't on it anyway plus I hate how much advertising it throws at me, skype sucks so non phone stuff, TS is the same.
Seriously, why do you need to replace a dedicated IM service? It does exactly what you want it to do, and you can generally run it at work without being raged at. The main issue with msn is people leaving it for no reason, wtb resurgence of msn users!
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
My biggest problem (like stated before) is the fact that as we all do, I have certain friends, and contacts on MSN that I have gathered over the years, some from RZ some not.
Now, some of those people, I DON'T want to have my Skype, and there is a lot of reasons for it! Some people I just don't want to be able to call me, some of those people I don't want to know my name, (My skype is my firstname+lastname). Etc, etc etc.
So moving my contacts is nothing I will do, I also like having a small Skype list, it's one of the things I've been trying to keep, while my MSN list has been growing for years, it has hundreds of people on it!

You can find persons who entered their email in their Skype account settings. So that wont be a problem.

Dude... I'm sorry but that first part of the sentence seems a bit sad... You claim he doesn't have many friends because he doesn't use WLM, I would claim the opposite. WLM is great if you want to stay anonymous, while I did myself for years, I no longer do, because my real friends know my name and are more then welcome in my Skype and FB.
While you don't need to tell me that internet friends can become real friends (I've gotten quite a few through this site), not needing the anonymity of WLM is an indication that you do have quite a few friends because you don't look to the internet for them.
No I'm not saying that people who use WLM (exclusively) don't have friends, I'm saying that not using it, can be considered a sign that you do have friends.
So yeah the only person I've spoken to on WLM the past half year, was Robert, who I definitely consider a friend, everyone else I either talk to on Skype or through FB, If I don't have someone on either, then they probably aren't much of a friend. This of course excludes people I talk to IRL. ;)
Oh and there are a few exceptions on RZ, but I don't have them on WLM either, so no loss there.

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Last time I let one of my MSN friends on my Skype I got called on Skype for Android every hour, its incredibly annoying when I need to use Skype for Android for real reasons, and not being prank called by a bunch of idiots which make up the majority of my MSN list, I still want to remain in contact with ALL of them.
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Get better friends then, my friends know me better then to pull that crap. I had a rule on WLM, people who invite me to random groups, will get removed from my list. While it shortened my list, it kept useless convo's to 0.
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
I haven't used WLM to talk to any of my friends i've actually met in real life, except a few that are from my classes (mainly for homework and team project stuff though). All my real friends have me on Facebook. Even at that, my real close friends have my phone number, so they can text and call me whenever.
WLM I currently only use to communicate with people I've met online (forums, etc)
Skype I only really use to communicate with friends/family overseas.
I can understand why Microsoft is doing this though, they've lost 33% revenue though their MSN service THIS quarter compared to the same quarter in 2011.
And Hotmail will still be here. That's something Microsoft can't close.. They are simply just migrating to Skype for their live chat service. As far as I'm away, when you login to WLM they'll tell you to go to Skype to create a new username then download skype to further talk to your friends form WLM (Your WLM friends have to register a skype username aswell). You can also merge an account (that's what I did recently through the Skype app for Windows 8)

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Pretty stupid that they just dutch it because I'm sure Windows live messenger could be furtherer very nice.
Really hate to see it go this way.
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Why not have a separate service to sign into,
>sign in with calling
(current skype)
OR
>sign in w/o
(MSN like)

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
Man thats really sad.... I really like MSN! ):

They already have... O.o
What's going to happen with my MSN bot??? It'll be useless. :(

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
heres the plan. RageMSN.
We host our own msn private server.

Skype aint that bad. I always had difficulties adding contacts on MSN but it was less buggy on Skype.
Skype's file transfer is horrible though, we dont get to preview pictures sent but have to download it and view it manually instead.

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
WTF? I don't even use motherfucking Skype,I use WLM as my only IM >.<
-
Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
I haven't used WLM in nrly 4 years as everyone I really spoke if disappeared or was just too busy. Eventually I stopped using it and having recently logged in for old time sakes only 1 person was online and I didn't even know them. XD
Anyways Skype isn't that bad, I use it a lot to keep in touch with family and close friends. I use it only on my phone though so easy to keep in contact with. Anybody who knows me is welcome to have it, just PM. ^^

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
So when are they actually ditching it? Idm tbh, I prefer Skype. Easier to use for things such as groups, calls etc.

They're expected to ditch it in March of 2013.

Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
I like Google Talk as a plain IM program. MSN I only keep because of Ragezone, and at that I am usually online invisible if the damn program works at all. I don't want to be forced into a video chat program with crappy IM capabilities. I guess we'll see what happens.
-
Re: Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype
I wonder why several of you have mentioned that you don't like Skype because you don't like the (video-)calling, however this has been an option in WLM for a very long time. While I definitely think Skype needs to be improved in the chat department, being against it because of the (video-)calling makes no sense.
Google Talk is decent, the major problem is that Google are being arrogant asses in the dumb way (MS is being arrogant here but it will probably work out for the better for them), because Google refuses to create a decent app for iOS, Windows Phone etc, they have no chance to become big on smartphones, MS is now finally doing this (they should have done that ages ago) by making Skype big, this will make it that it can become the biggest messaging and (video-)calling service on PC's and mobile devices.
