Election Results
obama feel happy :w00t:
romney feel sad :*:
i feel nothing :ott1:
I voted for mitt Romney cause he has magical underwear and he wants to wage war with muslim. that's fine by me.
Overall a pretty amazing election... Colorado legalizes weed period. A few others pass medical marijuana, (cant remember which off the top of my head)
Main, Maryland, Washington, and most likely Minnesota legalize gay marriage.
Oh, and Obama won. Niiccccce.
Can someone please explain if it's actually over?
Google Politics & Elections
There are some states with less than 50% reporting. What is it?
Also last election had over 120mil popular votes and atm only 102mil are in. Wouldn't 20+mil votes change outcome for couple of states giving more votes to romney?
Yes it is actually over... please remember that the popular vote does not decide the president, the electoral college does.
(Current EV counts are 303/203, leaving Alaska and Florida out of the mix currently.)
We already heard Romney's concession speech, and Obama's acceptance speech is getting ready right now.

For those of you who do not know how the electoral college works
Electoral college are appointed individuals per each state. Depending on population, these numbers change, usually following the same amount of individuals as those who are in the House of Representatives.
How does this electoral college work? Each state votes and depending on which way the vote slides the electoral college (usually) follows suit. If you win the majority vote, you get all the electoral college. Example, my state has 6 electoral votes. Even though Obama recieved ~40% of the vote, Romney received all of the electoral votes because Romney simply had a higher popular vote.
There are conditions in which the electoral college doesn't have to follow the popular vote or give all its votes to the winner of a state. An example of this is Nebraska in 2008 who gave 1 electoral vote to Obama and all the others to McCain, even though McCain clearly won the state.
As soon as the electors know their decision they vote, even in the case that not all of the individuals have voted. In Alaska some polls are still open, yet Obama has won.
TL;DR: Popular vote is just for show. In actuality 538 people actually decide who will be president, and although they usually follow what the people want, it isn't a rule.

Come time the presidential election takes place, your vote doesn't mean shit in regards to who becomes president. If you think it does then you need a reality check.
And not a single fuck was given.
yayyy I have to drive my friends to colorado now, wooooooot!
Indeed, in some states your vote really is useless, you can vote Obama as much as you want in Texas etc, but he will never win, however a vote on Romney would not have helped either, because he already won there anyway. Only votes in swing states have any use.
Wasn't it in 2000 that while Bush won, his opponent had more votes.
Anyway this is good, Presidents always do more in their second term, simply because they don't have to worry about re-elections.
I wonder if he will stop the wars this time or will he still be all like "nope lol"
Though it could have been stopped by 2011 (i believe), It's always being pushed back. USA has no use for fighting there anymore, since Osama is dead - I'm pretty sure the only reason they are still there is because Afghanistan is requesting their support. If they leave, they leave knowing that thousands of afghans are going to die, sinceal-Qaeda still has alot of power
But there's alot of history (that may not even be available to public) that keeps the US army there.
Alot of people think they're still there just for the money, which could be true too
Regardless of Population Votes or Electoral Votes, Obama won in both after all the votes were counted up.

303 - 206
Well deserved too imo.
Yes that is correct, Al Gore won with 500,000 popular vote, but lost by 5 electoral college votes.
(I live in one of those states that hasn't voted Democratic for over half a century (Kansas); The Bible belt sucks.)
Also, on the Colorado Legal Marijuana stuff, if I read right it doesn't come into effect until Jan 2014, so don't stat planning trips just yet ;D. (Washington may be sooner though)
Lul, heated discussions on skype about it last night. :D I was just sitting back laughing at you all arguing. :w00t:
roflmao. Though I knew about the electoral college votes. I didn't know they weren't required to lean towards the popular vote.
Why do people even do out if they're votes doesn't mean much? If a couple of people at a table decide who to vote for before the election even begins... .....
If romney was elected.. o lord lol. I'm sure things would not be the same in the US.
Actually a lot would be exactly the same. The US see's little to no change, regardless who the president is, not only are they puppets of big industries, but they also rarely hold a majority on all levels, so in the end they comprise with everything. The political system in the US is extremely rotten.
Things we need in the US before non-local politics matters:
1. Voting reform. Electoral college = broken. Despite winning by some 2% of the popular vote, Obama has 100 more electoral votes. That's 60%/40%. The electoral college does not reflect what the people want. It ends up making votes in population-heavy states mean almost nothing compared with votes in population-light states, and results in the concept of "swing states", which, in reality, are the only states in which voting for anything but local politics matters. First past the post also needs to go. A simple yes/no vote with a majority winner means with 2 candidates, you're guaranteed that almost 50% of the country is opposed to one of the candidates. With 3, on an even heel, it's 66%. This is unacceptable, as a minority vote in almost all cases is guaranteed to win. Finally, voting should require a test. I understand we outlawed these as they were abused to prevent uneducated blacks from voting, but that was racially motivated. Everyone should *NOT* have the right to vote. They should have the right to educate themselves about the issues and the candidates and make an informed decision, not just throw a ballot into a massive pile because they saw an advertisement they kindof agreed with. You should be required to take a 20-question test to vote, about political issues and candidate platforms, maybe larger, and only if you make an 80% should you be permitted to vote. Uninformed voters are extremely dangerous and harmful to the process.
2. Political party dissolution. It should not require tens to hundreds of millions of dollars to campaign for president. It shouldn't be a celebrity-like role. As a result, the party system, which stands as a barrier to entry for well-meaning and even-headed individuals, needs to go.
3. Campaign contributions by corporations should be banned at a federal level. This includes both direct contributions and mandatory wage garnishment. Corporations aren't people, and money isn't speech.
4. Tax reform so top earners aren't being taxed at a rate significantly lower than median earners. In a country where money = speech, and political contributions result in visibility, which then results in pulling millions of uninformed/gullible votes, people earning $10,000,000+/yr shouldn't be able to pay only 10% in taxes. These people should be damn near 35%, but loopholes are there to be abused. While there are orders of magnitude more median earners than top earners, if they are all paying excessive taxes, their disposable income for things like campaign contributions is extremely limited, while top earners are able to throw in huge sums of money to ensure their candidate does well, or to personally lobby for reform.
5. Lobbying should be illegal, period, and this includes back-room lawmaking. It's bribing lawmakers. It should be punished by no less than 30 years in prison for the lobbyist and any congresspeople or administrative workers found in collusion. Naturally, any congresspeople found guilty should be removed immediately from congress. All special interests and other expert contributors needed to make relevant and fair laws should be represented in public discussion, at the behest of congress, not based on their ability to pay money to be heard.
6. Debates should include all candidates and should last 5+ hours to actually be able to debate issues, rather than merely state a stance on 3 issues and say "that guy is wrong.". It's not entertainment, it shouldn't fit into your 1-hour slot WITH commercials. It's to fucking decide who should be president, you fucking moguls.
7. Promises made while campaigning should be required by contract of presidential inauguration to be met. If 95% of campaign promises aren't shown a good-faith effort, the candidate should be banned from ever serving in any political manner ever again, as should any of their immediate relatives.
8. All congresspeople should be banned from working at special interests following their terms. It is a clear "legal" pay-off. Companies found guilty should have their business licenses revoked indefinitely, and the congressperson put in prison for life. As a result, we should provide a lifetime gratuity to congresspeople for serving the country, and to prevent money from being a motivating factor when making law.
I could go on like this for a while, but basically, the corruption is so huge here, even though these seem a little extreme, they're necessary to prevent corporate ownership in government. And not a single thing on this list is going to ever happen, so you can be sure until we have a revolution, nothing will change, and no presidential candidate will change that.
You also need to realize that the president has little power. Congress makes law. Judges interpret law. The president has power, but we haven't seen a president execute their power for quite some time.
