WASHINGTON: - Hurricane Rita's winds eased a little on Friday night, but it remained a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory.
The NHC also said that some fluctuation in intensity was possible before making landfall, but the storm was still expected to come ashore as a dangerous Category 3 hurricane near daybreak on Saturday.
Rita, which continued to move toward the northwest at a slightly slower pace of 11 mph, could make landfall near the Texas-Louisiana border.
At 9 p.m. local time, the center of the storm was located about 85 miles southeast of Sabine Pass along the coast on the Texas-Louisiana border.
Rita's maximum sustained winds were about 125 mph while a Category 3 hurricane usually has maximum sustained winds of at least 111 mph.
