Has anyone been in the military?
So it's that time in my life where I really question my self-worth. I have not done much in my 19 years to really prove to myself that I can accomplish something in life.
I was just curious what are usually the basic requirements of military in your countries and what your experience was like?
I am thinking towards of going into a basic operators position, Being Canadian we are peacekeepers and do not go into action as often as the Americans but we do help protect civilian areas.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
In Finland, no requirements apart from being generally healthy and everyone who meets them has to go. It was a total waste of 180 days and every single one of them sucked. Sure, there were a few memorable moments achieved through being so miserable that plain being bored felt like a great time and I guess it makes you grow a little, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has a choice. Usually there are so many better ways to invest half a year into yourself...
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
I've never actually been in to the army but I've got an message from the government one day after my birthday that I'm able to join in. But i don't think that I'm going to do that, due me being homesick so i don't really want to try. But they do say, that you can achieve a lot when being in the army.
Such as meeting new people, learning new things related to army and of course educational causes. So when I'm a bit older then i would want to join.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
If you're just looking for something to realise your self-worth then you're making a huge, huge mistake. That's not what the military is for. It's not just a career, it's a lifestyle. Heroic things don't happen to those who go looking for them.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
In my opinion, military is great if it's something you've always been interested in or enthusiastic in, but I don't understand doing it just because you've got nothing going for you. Tons of people do that.
Sure, even if you have the motivation to adapt your lifestyle, you'll do the time and either re-enlist or stop, though if you aren't truly interested or truly "liking" it you probably won't re-enlist and then you're back to square one.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
Sadly, no such thing here ... >.>
Only way is to join a military universite after 12th grade, but things arent pink there too.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
Yes i am in the Military in Singapore Currently.
In Singapore is a Law that everyone Singaporean Son at the age of 18 is to Serve his country in what they call "National Service". Its on a standard duration of 2 Years. There are Different Units/Skill/Sections to learn from! It hard & tough.
Nice to Hear that?
My opinion on this?
Total waste of 2 years.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
We had the same law 7-8 years ago, but then the government decided that its not needed and top of that suspended a bit part of the army. All its left is enough for a parade. :/
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
National service is a bit silly for only 2 years. You spend the majority of that time training and don't even manage to "serve your country."
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
My sister had a letter to serve for 2 years in the Army, but since we moved we basically told em to F-off :ott1:
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
My cousin's husband is in the US Army now for 10+ years. He has worked his way up in the ranks some, but he says the shit still rolls down hill in the position he is in. So he is in charge of some soldiers but still has to do some grunt work for higher ups.
Overall he enjoys it, but not the politics of the job. He is currently deciding if he should stick it out to a full 20 years or not.
He has been deployed 3 times, twice to Iraq and the last time to Afghanistan. That is really hard on his family. His wife (my cousin) is a strong woman, but being without her husband was hard for her, dealing with all the home things plus two kids. They also move every couple of years depending on where he is stationed. So it is more difficult for her to find work. She is currently substitute teaching.
All I am saying is consider your family too. If you are planning to get married, or if you are really close to your family what impact would this have on them. Talk to them so you know what they think. My cousin knew what she was signing up for when they got married. They work it out. I dont think their life is for everyone.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
Don't forget the dark side of the military. Sexual abuse and rape happen frequently for women in the US as of 2008, not sure if it changed but just telling you guys out there.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
Thanks but I am not a female? And I do not have to worry about the family part, I am not close with either of my parents and I do not have a girlfriend/wife.

Applies for every Army regiment in the world;
Good cardio
Fair muscle strenght
Good mental capabilities
A little common sense
Muscle strenght comes from training, and there will be plenty of that - same for cardio.
You will need a strong psyche to manage the excruciating hours, lack of sleep, training, etc.
And that's about it - unless the regiment you want to apply for requires School grades which they do in Sweden - if so, then you'll want to fill that requirement too.
If you think it will be fun; go for it.
My experience with the Army;
My father did the regular "Lumpen" which was a ½ year of mandatory training in Sweden at the time - today it's voluntary and paid work.
My grandparents on my mothers side are both FN soldiers from Libanon and have received the Nobel peace price.
I've only got positive experience with the Army, since the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan didn't exist back then.
I reckon I will have a different view of this once I actually join the Army and get out there.
No one has ever said that it's going to be easy - hard on your family members, hard for you - but it's a job, it has to be done and if you're interested in it; whomever is there to take a place in the Army but you? Someone who doesn't want to, but have to because they're forced to? No. If you like the idea of helping civilians in areas like Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq - etc. Then do it! You might have a blast and you might not - Schrodinger's Cat; you never know until you've tried.
Re: Has anyone been in the military?
I'm not in the military, but I do know quite a bit about different country's militaries (not so much Canada, but yeah). On top of that, I'm in NJROTC (Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) where you learn about the Navy and the United States military, and other things.
(That's just my vouch for knowing things about this subject.)
Anyway, most of the time, if you don't plan to be an officer or something, then they'll take you on the spot. Requirements are pretty much like stated already; physical & mental health. Meaning you can't be overweight, sick, malnourished, etc. You also can't have mental issues that can affect the mission or task at hand. When enlisting, they'll probably give you numerous shots, immunities, and other things for safety in other environments your body isn't used to (Other Countries). Like most countries, enlistment requires basic training, which you should be fine if you're capable of doing a few push-ups and other things here or there. In basic training, they'll train you to do most things you'll need to know, that you don't already know. I'm not sure if other countries have this requirement, but in the United States you must take a test called the "ASVAB" which is like a common sense exam. Depending on the score, it will tell you what type of job you could partake in.
If you're that interested, find a recruitment center near you, and ask them yourselves. Just because you walk in doesn't mean you have to join. :)

That's just part of being in the military. Nobody ever said that joining the military automatically puts him on top. If he is interested in being a higher-up, he ought to go to school to be an officer instead of worrying about being bossed around. Either way, he's still doing someone's dirty work all the way up to the President himself. If I were him, I'd stick it out for the 20 years. It may be hard on his wife, but to get his money's worth of it all, 20 years is one big Military Pension.
