the problem is, of course, how to get the roles from the 1.4.5 files.
Someone have any ideas of how to do this?
And how to run this on crontab. (that is a problem too).

I said it again and again... talk with gamedbd over some socket implementation.
For PK kills, rewrite logdaemon, accept conenctions and have it write to sql when player is killed instead of dumping to log files and then parsing, that's shitty.

As for there being danger, that's bullshit. Gamedbd is a server. Servers where made to handle requests. If you ask it for data over the protocol, it will give you data. You don't spawn a new instance which will read data from disk like you do when you actually start a new daemon with listrole parameter. There is no way you can fuck over your data like this unless Wanmei did something seriously wrong.
I do not like perl at all. Messy syntax. For simple script shit, I much perfer PHP or python - latter only for small things though, because of the indentation "feature" :)

Character names are octets. Write a method to parse said octets to UTF-8.

The typical "One connection/thread" model is sufficient, since each map opens connection to logdaemon.
