This is why many kickstarter projects fail. Usually the only ones to succeed are those from reputable people/development teams, in this case these guys are reputable and have successfully made games in the past as recent as last year. The reason why this needs it, is because these types of games have serious funding issues, they are basically not blockbuster titles.
Frankly I'm not that worried that the games that get successfully supported will be made, the question really is, how good will it be? These games are usually made on a pretty tight budget and passion alone won't make it succeed.
That said, I do believe this game will be properly made, like I said it's a reputable guy with a reputable dev team behind him, it's obvious he has an passion for the game. The same goes for Star Citizen, while Lee has already told me that he think it's a rip off from Elite, the guy behind it is also passionate about those games, and since they are similar, I mean I got a huge Freelancer feeling when I saw this Elite and the development behind Freelancer was done by the guy from Star Citizen until MS bought it, that means we should be getting 2 pretty awesome games in the same genre. If I'd had to bet which team is better then it would be the one behind Elite, however the guys behind Star Citizen got way more money (7+ mill), so who knows what they can bring to the table.
Either way though, fans of these game will definitely be getting a great space game in a year or so.
