Helicopter crashes into a crane in Vauxhall, London.
BBC News - London helicopter crash: Two die in Vauxhall crane accident
The Helicopter crashed into a crane this morning at around 8AM. 2 people have been confirmed dead, one of which was the pilot of the helicopter and 13 injured.
The helicopter was on a scheduled flight from Redhill in Surrey to Elstree in Hertfordshire, but the pilot requested a diversion to the helipad in Battersea due to foggy weather.
Its unknown who is at fault here, some people are saying that the safety lights on the crane, which should be visible 24 hours a day, were not on. Some are saying that they were on. Hopefully the full situation will be worked out during the investigation.
This has now sparked discussion through MP's of London talking about Helicopter flight paths over London.
Personally I feel that this is just a really unfortunate accident which was a result of bad foggy weather.
RIP to the two who have died.
Re: Helicopter crashes into a crane in Vauxhall, London.
Yeah I heard that people had been complaining that the light on the crane was off, which people told to the government WEEKS before. I don't think the diversion helped either, but with the weather being such harsh conditions it's something he had to make. They've also said that they aren't sure whether the pilot had a technical problem. It's sad that it happened with such timing.. rush hour in Central London! I was expecting more deaths than casualties, but thankfully that isn't the case this time.
I'd like to add that the helicopter that was the AgustaWestland 109 had a good history safety-wise, and they said that the helicopter hadn't had an accident such as this in at least 20 years.
RIP to those who died. To those who escaped, put the lottery on.

Flying a helicopter over a (capitol) city in fog probably isn't the greatest of ideas.
Re: Helicopter crashes into a crane in Vauxhall, London.
I'd say people are stupid enough, to fly a helicopter in to Fog. Ending up with people dying. But I'd also think that they thought that they would make it through the fog which they didn't.

If you watch the video, the eye witness said that at half 7 it wasnt too foggy, you were still able to see far, but when it had got to 8 it was really foggy, hence why the pilot wanted to land at a nearby helipad rather than his original destination.
Re: Helicopter crashes into a crane in Vauxhall, London.
If the boom wasn't lit on the crane i'd say that is why it was hit.
Re: Helicopter crashes into a crane in Vauxhall, London.
It's a damn shame this incident happened and lives were lost but aren't MP's going a bit OTT wanting to change flight arrangements over the capital given this is the first crash in like... whenever was there a major air crash like this in London? (The BA flight being downed at Heathrow didn't kill anyone and was caused by birds hitting the engine so simmer!) The pilot was being sensible in wanting to land presumably at Battersea but obviously fog and as MasterD said if the boom of the crane wasn't lit then it was an accident waiting to happen

Heard about this on the radio this morning, such a shame that it has happened.

Your totally right. I am not being sarcastic.

Rest In Peace to those Men.
The Pilot probably tried to do what he thought was best. I'm sure he wouldn't have taken a diversion if there was a fair chance of him reaching his original destination.

Such a shame all those people died.
All of the 2 :/:

Sounds like poor management on both ends. Seeing as the crane wasn't properly prepared for illicite weathers and the helicopter took off without proper planning, it wasn't going to end well regardless.. regardless though; tragedies like this occur all over the world. No point in remorsing on two ended lives.
