Beyonce Lip Syncs the 'Star Spangled Banner' at Obama's Inauguration

Beyonce lip-synced the "Star-Spangled Banner" at Monday's inaugural ceremonies, a U.S. Marine Band spokeswoman said today.

The band wasn't playing when Beyonce performed her rousing rendition of the national anthem at President Obama's second inauguration.

"We all know Beyonce can sing," Master Sgt. of the U.S. Marine Band Kristin duBois told ABC News today. "We all know the Marine Corps Band can play. We do not know why she decided to go with the pre-recorded music at the last minute."

DuBois later added that, to her knowledge, Beyonce was not singing. It was Beyonce's voice, but a pre-recorded version heard by about a million people in Washington and millions more on television.

A representative for Beyonce did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The band was not playing while Beyonce was singing, duBois added, but it was live during the rest of the performances, including Kelly Clarkson's rendition of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee." The band was asked not to play for only the national anthem, duBois added.

Clarkson could be seen signaling to Beyonce after the national anthem performance and appeared to mouth the words, "It's so hard."

James Taylor, another performer at the cold, outdoor inauguration ceremony, Monday said he was happy to get through his performance "without any train wrecks."

"It's always hard for a guitar player to play when it's cold because your hands sort of stiffen up and you know nerves tend to do that to you anyway. So I was, you know, very relieved to have gotten to it without any major train wrecks," he told George Stephanopoulos and Diane Sawyer.

The issue surfaced today when Washingtonian magazine first reported that it didn't seem as though "The President's Own" United States Marine Band was playing during Beyonce's rendition.

The pop star, 31, seemed to have audio issues at one point during the song, pulling out her ear piece.

DuBois said she did not know why Beyonce took the ear piece out.

The Washingtonian also noted that Beyonce posted an Instagram photo of herself in a recording studio holding a copy of the sheet music to the "Star-Spangled Banner."

Opinions on it? I don't get why someone like her would need to.

Just as bad as Cheryl Cole. I guess it's her nerves though, but she should be used to that by now. If it's not that then I don't have an explanation for her.

It didn't matter for me. Even the pre-recorded version made me get goosebumps.

Probably just the fear of embarrassment in front of millions of people.. I mean, the inauguration of a president? That's the big shots.

Obviously, because Beyonce can't sing. At all.

Being the highest paid X doesn't make you the best X.

People who get paid significantly more than those more skilled than them are just better at negotiating with business people. There's a reason Kanye, in spite of being void of any musical talent or skill, makes enough money to laugh at everyone else.

Beyonce, like many modern pop artists, requires significant work done to make her singing bearable, and that work can't be done live, that's why her truly live "singing" is usually a word here-and-there and she sounds out of breath due to performing, while the stuff that's obviously lip synching (almost all of it) sounds perfect. Every other singer in the world makes small mistakes live. Somehow Beyonce doesn't? Nope, you'd be incredibly naive to believe that.

I think my favorite one is one where she's out dancing yet the singing is perfect and at the end she says 3 words and she sounds exhausted, as in it's clear from the shaking in her voice and the rate of exhalation that she can't even speak in her normal voice -- yet somehow the previous 3 minutes of singing were pitch perfect with no audible breaths taken? Yeahhhhh, ok.

The only real reason I could think of is that she lip synced was she was having throat issues. You can blame Jay-Z for that.

It could be for any reason from simply being lazy (for lack of a better word) or using lip sync as a back-up for a sore throat. As far as I am aware she hasn't disclosed a reason so could speculate all we want but she isn't the first or the last to us it and I don't begrudge her for it, it is a very intense time to perform as it is.

So for me, I don't think less of her for doing it. :)

Not gonna argue her quality of singing. But in general payments have nothing do to with quality in the music industry.
There is a reason why they say pop stars are made.

Remember that she was made as well, Destiny's Child was a pop band that was made purely to make money, some are obviously better then others, but it's not so much about quality as it is about advertising and all that. This is also the reason why most of them disappear when the band falls apart.

She doesn't do anything live for a reason. I refuse to agree that any person is even remotely good at something if you can't actually see their work.
