New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
Hello!
Quote:
Microsoft's next-generation Xbox will require a constant internet connection and block the use of second-hand games, a new report has suggested.
It is believed that Xbox Live will become an integral part of the machine's functionality, and that games, which will ship on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, will come with a one-time activation code, according to Edge Online.
The report also suggests that the new Xbox will feature an AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. The size of the hard drive, however, is yet to be decided.
The new Xbox has reportedly entered beta, with a shipment of brand new prototype kits having made their way to developers.
Alleged Xbox 720 patent filings suggest Microsoft's next console will feature an improved Kinect device and two CPUs, one for gaming and another for multimedia applications.
The filings support some of the details discovered within a set of alleged leaked Xbox 720 documents from 2010.
The 56-page set was removed from the web following an intervention by Microsoft's legal team.
It claimed that the Xbox 720 will launch during the 2013 holiday season and feature Kinect 2.0, 3D technology and the long-rumoured Xbox TV.
The new Xbox will reportedly launch alongside Project Gotham Racing 5, which is said to be in development at Liverpool studio Lucid Games.
In my opinion, they will stop second-hand games soon.
What's your opinions?

That's an obviously gay fucking money grab on behalf of microshit and they should suck giant black dicks for it and then proceed to burn in hell for eternity. That annoys me if thats true.

Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
This has been the way games content has been going for years. I think pretty much everyone who thought about DRM knew this was going to happen, and was the entire motive behind it. Companies were loosing far more to the second hand game market than pirates, easily.
I'd question how legitimate this is however as it's already been established in Europe that it's legal to resell games, specifically downloaded ones let alone the actual disc. Top EU court upholds right to resell downloaded software | Ars Technica I wouldn't be shocked if Microsoft were forced to let you resell your code, because it's a legal right frankly.
As for the rest of the system spec, it's a bit shit really. PCs are far over those specs, though I guess as always it's the price that matters.

Surely they wouldn't be that stupid to require an active connection at all times. Imagine the shit storm if Xbox Live goes down for just about anything (not to mention if hackers go at it)
A system that most online services use where you need to be online every once in a while or anything like that, makes a lot more sense.
But hey who knows, they might just be stupid enough.

Well it is Microsoft...

If this legit,I'll just stick with Sony.

Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?

I'm sure they will probably scale it down to some kind of connection needed everytime you insert a new game...it will check for a serial and mac address...make a entry if new...and deny playability if it exists with a different mac address.

Delete pls, just rumors. No need to debate this until its confirmed.
Microsoft is way too smart to do this.

Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
Doubt Microsoft will require an internet connection at all times, simply cannot see that happening.

Why delete, the debate is still completely legitimate seeing that even if it does not happen with the next gen consoles it will probably be implemented sometime in the near future in some form or another.
As for your assumption that EU courts will stand by the 2nd hand ruling, I am not as confident. If Microsoft and Sony are going this far to curve how their games are sold, they can easily find loopholes in the system. Take for instance if games are no longer 'sold', but are 'given' with keys that allow for game play. Although practically the same in reality, on paper it changes ownership completely. You no longer own the game, you own the ability to play the game, which is completely different.
This same idea can be used with something like Netflix, you do not own the movies, you own the ability to watch the movies, thus why Netflix accounts cannot be resold. (Aka, this is completely legal, and honestly is the best business model for console and game creators alike).

Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
So if you get a new Xbox for ANY reason whatsoever, you'd have to buy a completely new copy of the game? I'm sorry but that is complete horse shit.
EDIT:
Just reading what Ron said made me realize that since it'd be linked to your account, you would be able to use it an unlimited amount of times so long as you were signed in; and as this would bring a problem up for people who switch names often, it's the same with Steam, and I've run into no problems with that as I generally keep the same username/account forever.
EDIT #2:
This will more than likely still upset a lot of people. I just don't usually sell my games very often. It will definitely hurt a lot of game shops' business. Gamestop's main business is buying and selling used games. They'll still have older console games, though.

Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
I don't agree with the Steam analogy completely...Steam games can be cracked and shared then played with no Steam account whatsoever.
Even if this is implemented I'm sure there will be a work-around eventually...pirates are a tricky lot and love a challenge.

Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
Shit gets real, problem is that things arent the same in the different countries, there are places where a constant, stable internet connection is pretty expensive. Also same goes for the games, here people tend to go for piracy all the time, jailbrake this and that, doing whatever they can to avoid buying the original product, which is kinda sad.

Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
This reminds me of Diablo 3.
I am glad I don't own any consoles.
-
Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
Look's like Xbox 360's the last Microsoft console I get.
-
Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
To be honest, if they do stop pre-owned games it will cause a big impact on gamers as most people like to trade in unused games to get a new game to complete then do the same process.

Re: New Xbox requires constant connection, blocks second-hand games?
Just Sucks... if this is true. :\

I don't know about either, on 1 hand surely they can't be that stupid to actually remove offline play from it's completely library of games, on the other hand it's not like they don't have a track record of stupid mistakes.
I honestly don't know, 404 mentioned Diablo 3, now nobody thought they were stupid enough to make it online only (not to mention there dozens of other stupid mistakes), but they did it anyway.
In the end companies are about profit, if they think they will increase their profits this way, then they will. It's why I have so much hatred for large companies, only money counts.
