Camelot Unchained - MMORPG RvR (DAoC 2)
Hello everyone,
Mark Jacobs (well known for Dark Age of Camelot) has started a [/COLOR]KickStarter project named Camelot Unchained. This is a game that will be a RvR & Crafting oriented game without any PvE. It looks very promising. Here is the project video :
They are releasing some updates every day about art works & technical programming architecture.
Custom networking client - server architecture to handle lot of concurrent players, HTML / JS for interface, etc)
Now, this game seems more along the lines of a 2015 launch which is quite far away. For those looking for a PvP driven game with the holy-trinity class system we all love and enjoy, CU (Camelot Unchained) is looking like a place to be.
There are some few points taken from the videos :
- RvR based. Limited PvE, to the point of it being considered siege only.
- No easily obtainable 'great' gear. Nothing is handed to you. If its good- it will take plenty of time and effort. The sensation of it actually feeling like a reward. Completely player driven... gear does not drop.
- Extended version of the Holy-Trinity system (Healer, Tank, DPS) with a few additions such as Hybrid and Crafter.
- Crafting can play a LARGE part of the RvR experience if that is a role you want to play in it.
- Potential of Guild and Player Housing anywhere in the game world.
- No Auction House. Players can set up their own in attempts at selling to other players.
- DRM free for all additionals goodies (soundtracks & making of dvds)
- Will be Subscription based, BUT expected to be cheaper than the current MMOs.
If you're looking for that DAoC experience from long ago with its own new twists, I think this is the game for us. There will be much more information released along the way, so please stay tuned or post something that hasn't been said !
Kissy

I fail to see the logic of using the holy trinity system in a non PvE game. The holy trinity is entirely based on PvE, and hell end game raiding at that as it's unbalanced for most of PvE. I'd prefer it if all classes could be speced in different directions to do each role, rather than it being a class system. Sort of like GW2 I guess.
Crafting sounds awesome, and if I do go and play this game it'd be what I'd do. Probably the only thing about the game that interests me really, the RvR stuff sounds like it's just rehashed content from previous game (ie GW2).
The fuck does he mean it's DRM free? It's a fucking online game with a sub fee and from what I can tell a server architecture. How can it possibly be DRM free? Are they retarded or something, DRM, Digital Rights Management, I mean really the clue is in the name. How are the rights to the game managed? Because clearly they are if you are having a subscription fee. I'm not going to back purely because of this BS, it pisses me off so much when games companies say they don't do DRM when they clearly do. If your product requires the user to be online, it's fucking DRM. Get over it, every mmorpg has DRM because its inherent to the product. DRM is only bad when it's unnecessary, like in a single player game or attached to music/films/other media.

Actually the GW2 RvR is also a rehashed content from previous games (Dark Age of Camelot, Lineage and probably some others older).
The difference in GW2 is that you are in a group with your whole realm, in DAoC it was only 8-player groups roaming together. That's why the holy trinity was doing well in it and would be probably not be as good in GW2 : you canno't survive if you are focused by 5-6 players without real healers; I think it's more a matter of gameplay.
Sorry, I didn't finish correctly this line : DRM free for additional contents. Edited :)

GW2 was the last game released (afaik) that featured RvR content, which is why I mentioned it. Before GW2 I would reference Warhammer, and before Warhammer I referenced DAoC. When talking about mmorpgs in general it's best to reference the latest game because that's the one most people will have heard about or played. Or WoW for pretty much anything else, lol. I'd never suggest GW2 RvR was innovative, and frankly every game these days tends to build upon a rehash of a small element of another game. But I don't want to give you a lecture on innovation!
My issue with the holy trinity in PvP is that it's never balanced. From what I understand it's supposed to be like Healer > Tank > DD > Healer. But really DD tends to be overpowered to the point that they kill other dps, and tanks, and healers are just a joke. Seriously if a healer can't keep someone up while focused by 1 player, what use are they in larger encounters? It just pisses me off because I enjoy playing a healer. In GW2 they did away with classes entirely, everyone was basically a DD but had access to at least 1 heal and could spec into some tank and healing skills in trade for damage. It makes for far more enjoyable combat as you are essentially responsible for your own survival, and can't blame a poor healer who stood no chance of healing the incoming damage anyway.
It says DRM free on the kickstarter page. That is simply bullshit because it's an online game where you need to login to a server. It's an inherent characteristic of the game type, and saying otherwise just makes them sound like they don't know what they are talking about.

Hello :)
I do also like to play healers in PvP games, and that's the reason why, even if I think that it was really new and not common, I did not like the way GW2 did their all hybrid classes system.
As far as I am concerned, I do like Holy Trinity in PvP, but this mainly depends on the way combat works. Of course it has to be a group based combat and not a 1v1 / 2v2. You are right saying that healers are useless if they cannot heal someone in a 1v1 battle, but I hope it will not be that way in CU, and that they will more rely on a CC / Interrupt system to balance everything, so that healers can protect themselves by interrupting DPS.
The balance should be easier since there is no PvE content. (No mobs to kill, but some NPC to interract with). They did a well job in DAoC concerning balance in RvR because they was not focusing too much in PvE.
It only talk about DRM FREE soundtracks, (Or I missed it somewhere else).
Cheers,

Camelot Unchained: CSE Smackhammer! (and server tech) - YouTube
And there goes all my faith in the development team. Seriously a professional artist ran up and asked if they could make it save and persistent? Are you fucking kidding me... Plus I'm pretty sure networking is a simple if not default script in Unity. Why they'd show an engine I'd hope they aren't using, and talking about extremely obvious and simple features is beyond me.
So yeah, I think I'll wait to see some proper beta footage before I'm willing to lay down money for it now.
