Set Variables in Php via the URL

So, i have a nifty User banner i made for the hotel, but the problem is that, it only works for me, because i set it to get the stuff 'WHERE username = 'John' in the sql.

How would i make it so that it shows other peoples when you add like /userbar.php?username=Rees etc to it?

Oh yeah, thats how to do the avatarimage cache thing.
