I don't see any major advantages of SteamOS versus running Windows with Big Picture on your living room TV.
When it comes to the new trend of independent game development companies and crowd funded game development. The cost of porting a game to linux is much more than most indie game developers can dish out.
The only advantage I can see, is the cost of ownership of an inexpensive Steambox platform, with the free SteamOS running on it. So you'd get a living room "gaming" setup for about $100-$200 cheaper than a next-gen console. However, this machine will be one that has lower performance and lower graphics quality compared to a next-gen console.
So for me, I'll stick with my PC and use Big Picture if I ever feel the need to play on the "Big Screen" TV.
