Off-Topic - Community chat thread.

This thread is a kind of dumping ground for "interesting" and community building off-topic posts in the Rose section.

If you have something you'd like to post, but fear it's off-topic, feel free to add it here, and regulars can see it and join in. If you are feeling care-free and post something inoffensive but off-topic elsewhere in this section or conversations go too far off course, I may move them to this thread.

It's not a replacement for "Outer World" sections, but could be useful for topics which don't quite fit there, or here, but are good for "getting to know one another". As I say, that builds communities, allows friendships to form and common interests to be found. All of which is an "enabler" for team building.

Also; when trying to learn to change things, don't decide what you want to change and then try to work out how to do that, instead try changing things and see what effect it has on the game. ;) The former tends to people having great plans to change things which require very in-depth knowledge and a broad range of skills which take years of study to develop. Whether it be artwork assets and animation or in-depth coding and mathematics.

Watch a small child learning... They don't decide they don't want the beach ball where it is, but somewhere else. What they do is throw their arm about until it collides with the ball and observe the effect they have had upon the world around them with glee. ^_^ If they break stuff, they smile, giggle and clap their hands, if they make something work, a toy car roll along the floor or a building block snap into place they are ecstatic. This is how we must proceed with any new task for which we have no prior experience. ;)

Except with nuclear reactors they kind of went the other way that you describe and it did indeed take them years to make it do what they wanted.

Marie Curie took the other approach and look what happened to her

FYI I am presently sitting less than 100 feet from an operating reactor core. Can't actually see it from here since I am outside the containment building itself, but it's really cool looking down into the pool around the core and seeing the eerie blue glow of the Cherenkov radiation

AKA you're dead in less then a year due to gamma radiation :p

nah there's no gamma radiation here.
Gammas can't penetrate anything thicker than a sheet of paper so what chance do they have of getting through 20 feet of water and 10 feet of lead lined concrete?
We can't even measure gammas at the surface of the reactor pool.

The bigger problem is high energy neutrons which we use to irradiate samples in order to change the chemistry of them by neutron capture.

Don't ask me to turn lead into gold because lead is about 10 mass units bigger than gold so adding extra neutrons and protons won't ever do it. The only known ways to make gold are from Platinum (which is more expensive to begin with) or mercury

Anyway this is getting ridiculously off topic so we should probably stop now.

It has been done btw!

Only making gold from lead is so expensive it'll never be near profitable.

True. I guess it takes a Hiroshima or two to get a working reactor... then a Sizewell B and Chernobyl or two before they stop leaking or going pop when you can't be bothered to maintain them any more. ^_^

Yes it is, yes we should, but I will allow it.

IDK what you guys think, but in Priston Tale, I made a dedicated thread for interesting off-topics like this. The reason being that I see great potential for groups forming to make new and exciting developments from people "getting to know one another" in an area they have a common interest. That doesn't happen in the general off-topic sections, and continual off-topic in threads is *very* messy. It seemed like a good compromise, and I'm happy to set the same up here... if people are interested.

If not, I'll let this run out and then clean up for the lasting record. :)

I'm afraid you're dead wrong about that. Gamma radiation (or gamma rays) can pass through entire suns given that they've got enough energy. This is most likely however not the case where you were. I can however tell you that the concrete alone is probably not enough to stop them from causing damage, hence the 20 feet of water on top, which btw still isn't enough to stop most of it, just enough to make it that it's not too harmful to people.

I played on a PServer that had naked characters (with respective reproductive organs) and /ani (some number) that did sex animations...e.e
