New members have friends automatically?

I'm running Pheonix and for some reason new members are automatically friends with all other users, is there a way to change this?

I'm not into phoenix much but, try truncating the table that supports the friends in the database.

Check your database, as you probably did not clear your messenger_friendships table if you used a database that was already filled. Empty this table (note, all friendships will be unlinked).
