Aeroplane gunshots?

Well, last night, I heard noises that sounded like fireworks, but speeded up, followed by the sound of jets. I looked out the windows and saw two air fighter planes, one in pursuit of each other, and the sound of fireworks was in fact gunshots from one of the air fighters.
I'm wondering why the hell was this happening?

That was me, I'm sort of wanted by your gov't. But in all seriousness, probably an aircraft coming in without permission and having to get shot at. That or a practice round, but that wouldn't be happening above civilian heads.

Actually once me and a friend were in belfast city centre (outside the city hall infact) and we saw a flaming ball (waht you'd expect a meteor to look like) speeding towards the ground, we shouted and ranted about it for ages but then we just let it slide, considering how far away it was and the speed it was moving at we worked out that it must have been and I quote 'fucking massive like'
