Hi WOW section.

I got few questions.

What is the best atm, Anscent or Mangos?
What is PRO and CONS?
And what will be best in future?
What DB to use?
What core to use?

I know there is sticked topic but there is a lot version there. I wanna know a good one to start a new server.

Ascent by a long shot. Formerly known as Antrix, it is the worlds most stable WoW emulator. And unlike Mangos, it is actually legal to host a private server.

Mangos has this stupid license that states your server is for educational purposes only, and not to be made public or commericial endeavors.

Oh well, noone cares about that license anyway. :D

if your starting out start on mangos! config is easier commands are easier and i find mangos alot better for me and a few friends to get on and mess around if you want to make a high capacity server then use ascent if you want to just mess with a private server use mangos basically

Here's a quick breakdown in a fairly organized fashion:

Ascent
Pro's
  • High User Count
  • Lots of Expandability (GM Scripts, C++ Compiled Scripts)
  • Large Number of Available Databases
  • Updated Frequently (Several times a day)
Con's
  • Can Be Difficult to Setup without Experience
  • Latest Cores have a Number of Stability Issues between Computers (You'll most likely need to compile it on your own)
  • Updated Frequently (Yes, this can be a bad thing too. It makes it far more time-consuming to stay updated.)
  • Frequent SQL Changes (Causes loading problems if your database isn't kept up with the newer cores.)

MaNGOS
Pro's
  • Tends to Have Less Stability Issues (code is typically more throughly checked before being implemented)
  • Ease of Setup
  • Ease of Use In-game (Game Master Commands are more "user-friendly"
  • Many features in MaNGOS are less buggy then their Ascent counterparts
Con's
  • Less Support on RaGEZONE (Most of us use Ascent, so the number of people who know how to work with MaNGOS will be available to help.)
  • Illegal to Host Server Publicly (It's in the MaNGOS EULA that hosting public servers is forbidden.)
  • Fewer Database Options (Most Teams seemed to have moved on to Ascent completely.)

This is far from a comprehensive list, but I hope I've made you a bit more aware of the differences in a non-technical sense, as well as in a functionality sense.

Wow. That was a big help! I already make a Ascent one. But Version 2.1.x Updating to 2.2.2 giving me loading error. I already read its about DB but didnt found correct yet.

And about VIP and NON-VIP system. Do Mangos and Ascent have it?

Public server hosting illegal independent from any server EULA. It's illegal for _any_ non bliz WoW-like server. Includng ofc Ascent case.

Yes, but I figured I'd point out the difference at least. Technically, hosting an Ascent server isn't illegal. It becomes illegal when you use Blizzard's data (Maps, DBCs, Blizzlike Database).

Awesome list, pretty much sums everything

To sum it up in a quit sentence:

If you want more features, and are planning on having fewer people playing (50 - 100), Mangos should work fine, if you want more people playing with a fewer features (But more stability), ascent will work.

The only problems I have had with Mangos (I dont download repacks) is trying to figure out from where I am to start applying the mangos fixes to the database (I dont know what rev, for instance, Silvermoon DB Rev18 is up to date with as far as the server goes, so I dont know from what server rev to start applying the sql updates).

Either way, I would never host a private server publicly, but thats just me. And if I play on one, I will most likely get an account (Blizzard deserves their money, same with any other game I play - if I play on the server I most likely have an account on retail).

I have personally used mangos for awhile back in the day and it was extremly simple to set up if your going to just have a few people just to mess around in the game. i havent tried anything with antrix because well mangos seemed to have less bugs and more features and it was only me and a few people playing it, however with all the repacks that mangos gets there are conflictions with version numbers like i am in now, i heard 2.1.3 is the last that mangos was able to work with until someone gets something up and running cause loading these supposid 2.2.2 patches (even though 2.2.3 is out now) i get nothing but version conflicts even with the new revamped silvermoon db they have on there back up site.

Yea, I generally download the source myself and compile rather than get repacks.
