Hello,

As an intro, i'd like to mantion (for all those flamers etc) that i am with ragezone since years although i dont post much - i never do when i dont have to say anything - you pro guys doing a very nice job in here so there is no need for any smartassing etc.

Thanks to the guide by hicks (and his predecessors) i managed to launch the L2C4 server (as earlier the L2C1 some years ago along with L2J)

At the moment i used it only to play around with, messing with classes, setups etc but i dont hide that in the nearest furture, after i get some things up and running correctly i am gonna publish it.

And here come my question:

How much bandwith - roughly daily/monthly average does a server with say 1000 players use.

I ask here for some details on connection load and daily/monthly transfer rates.
At the moment i am running it (along with my job projects) on a Dell poweredge Tower Server i got from my company with following specs:
Dual Xeon 3,0Ghz Duo Core CPU's
6/8GB RAM
2x250GB SATA HDD's

The connection at this moment is irrelevant for me, as i connect to it through LAN on a Gigabit Card at the moment - connection for it later on.

What would you recommend ?

I am planning to get one of our Dell 1U duo-socket Rack servers which we dont use (buy it from the company on the present setup and upgrade it)

What options shall i keep in mind ?
The max i can put into one of those babies are 2,66GHz Quad Core Xeon's (up to two of them) and max 32GB RAM.
Also it has the option to house up to 4 73GB SAS Hard Drives with 15,000rpm

Now i wonder,

What is the effect if it comes to the CPU's ?
RAM is obvious - the more, the better
HDD Space - those HDD's are on a Raid setup so effectively it would be 2x73GB on 4 drives - enough for the server and database ?
Or just keep with the two 250/500GB drives at 7200rpm on same RAID setup?
Any point keeping one powerful machine for gameserver, NPC server and DB Server or better split into 3 smaller ones, let's say all three with two Duo-Core 2,0GHz CPU's and 8GB RAM each.

Money is a little issue as i can get the parts through the company at Bargain prices.

As for the connection.

i know that in the long run a 100mBit dedicated would be needed but for now i would keep it on the 250mBit shared with the whole server room we have (i have that option).

What is the roughly average load on the bandwidth ?

Once, for MUOnline we had a project to count an average bandwidth usage per user per day aswell as resources usage on same.
Anyone did something similar here ?

Please, no comments about "you never gonna afford this" because i wouldnt ask if i havent had a point in it.

Any constructive feedback welcome.

Thanks in advance,

Airam

You don't really need another server, this one can handle 2k players already.
1000players = ~30Mb
But regarding the bandwith i have no clue ;)

not holly shit - Dell Poweredge :P

i didnt say i will put that in (ok that much money i dont wanna waste for the start) but that's a possibility.

what i meant withe the bandwidth is, that i can put it in my company's server room and pay them for the transfer load rather than renting a dedicated connection for the server only

i'd then do a 2xDuo Core Xeon at 3,0Ghz or 2,66Ghz for the start with 2x73GB SAS drives for the performance (ram 4GB/6GB for start - then add when needed).

What connection should i rent for 2000 players ?
If you say 100-200GB a month is more than enough what's the usage (meaning the mBit's) for those 2000 players.

I have to consider the options if it's cheaper to rent the bandwidth on a higher connection or get a dedicated line with unlimited bandwidth (dedicated is better but how much needed).

Rada - did you mean i need a 30Mbit connection or that the Database will use 30MB ?

See my problem is that i have a good hardware for it but have to get a connection :P

Anyone has contact for a cheap Co-Location company in UK or Ireland where i could just put this baby in ?

so in lookout then for a cheap colocation in UK or Ireland with a 100mbps

paradox - when i was playing around with L2J i had access to a superb connection but no money for hardware - now i have the hardware at a super cheap price but no access to that old connection :P

thought that maybe someone would have experience with some ISP's in these two countries so i dont go with a crap one :)
