I was at a house the other day and I noticed that they were playing movies without the disc and had a whole range of movies and it was a normal xbox (not a 360), so when I was around today I thought I would get my old xbox that I use as a DVD player out and I was wondering how I could do it since my discs don't get taken care of very well I thought I could 'back them up' to an extent.

If they had quite a few movies on it then my guess is that they are using it as a media center extension and they were loading the movies from their computer.

You can probably copy it to the Xbox, but it's quite useless, it's much easier loading your data from your pc.

Seems plausible, I didn't take much notice as to whether it was revloved around the actual xbox nor I didn't see a hard drive but that could of been in the TV unit, all I really know is they were changing the movies via the xbox controller. The movies that I've been downloading lately are 300mb .mkv (I can convert to .avi and burn to disc etc) so I wouldn't need that much space -- I don't even play the xbox. The main reason as to why I wanted them on the console was that I can watch it on my TV at my dads when I move in with him and then when I move out of there I can take the xbox with me, I don't plan on taking the PC since my brother will need it for school work.

I think you misread my post. You can use the Xbox as a media center extension, meaning you can let it connect to your pc and read the files from there, so you can play the video files with the Xbox from your pc.

Mhmm, are you sure that's on a normal xbox not a 360? I can only see one ethernet port, one port for the red/white/yellow cable and one port for the power cable? So I'm guessing I'll have to by some type of network accessory that plugs into the controller outlet?

Would you need something like xbox live gold or something for that? Or can you just hookup a few cables? I would love to be able to watch movies I downloaded on the TV.

The xbox will of been mod chipped like mine :P: i had a 150gb hdd added and the ability to run pirate games.

Since when is the Xbox wireless?

Well last time i checked you only need 1 network port now don't you?

No, but you do need mediacenter software. There are softmods and hardmods, which is basicly either hacking it, or putting a chip in it, once you got that you can put mediacenter software on it. I don't really know how you go around doing it since my brother did mine, but it's not that hard.
Ugh I just want to store a couple of dvds not spend like a fair bit of money doing all upgrades to it..
Afaik that's not possible, you will need to do some kind of modding.

I've seen 'em with huge hard drives put in, some have every game published saved on it.

Well, fool on me then ;)
