As the title says; do you believe things happen for a reason and are inevitable. Or do you believe we shape our own lives and every action we make helps shape it. I just read how possibly one of the greatest boxers Muhammad Ali took up boxing after he had his bicycle stolen from him. Would you class that as fate and it was bound to happen because it was the thieves fate to steal from him. Or it was just a random event that might not have happened?
EDIT: Btw just incase I get those ass' posting how it's 'in the wrong section' and not staying at all on-topic; I posted it here because it's more of an opinion and you can't really prove/disprove it in a debate. Well from my view anyway...
I also don't believe in it, but it'd be interesting to see other peoples opinions about why they believe in it, or even why they don't

Wow very difficult question, especially for me. About a year or so ago I was debating this alot because there are so many different ways to look at it.

I suppose though at the end of the day, it's always best to look at things in a much positive light as possible. So even though I don't whole heartedly believe that everything happens for a reason it's best to do so.

Your Muhammad Ali example is great, but you could always match it with an example such as this. Was the death of Bruce Lee something of which happened for a reason at the age of 32 ?

Again something which can be looked on in many different ways. You can say Bruce Lee's death is what truly cemented his Legacy in the massive following he has even in todays generation. But you can also say because of the age of which he died he could have personally shown the world much much more, but will never have the chance to.

Nope there's just one way to look at it

Dictionary said:
fate |fāt|
noun
1 the development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power : fate decided his course for him | his injury is a cruel twist of fate.

I am an Atheist, and therefore do not believe in fate.
For us it's all about determinism.

Dictionary said:
determinism |diˈtərməˌnizəm|
noun Philosophy
the doctrine that all events, including human action, are ultimately determined by causes external to the will. Some philosophers have taken determinism to imply that individual human beings have no free will and cannot be held morally responsible for their actions.

I'm not sure what to answer for this. I've been convinced at point that I don't at all, and yet I often find myself blaming soemthing out of our control for things that happen, whether good or bad. I guess I do believe in Fate slightly, not nearly as greatly as some do thats for sure. I do think there are some things in this world that do happen for some reason beyond our knowledge/control

there's many ways to say how something happens. some do believe in fate, while others think its pure luck. like striking a lottery, do you think its fate or luck. some think its just a matter of chance, while others think, as said above, its what you do that shapes you.

for one, it is not only what you do that shapes you, but your surroundings. how people act, is this fate? or is how they act just a matter of chance? is this post, this word that i am writing now a matter of fate? a matter of chance? or a matter, where i work hard to develop myself intellectually to become all these?

and thus, i do not fully believe in fate, nor do i disbelieve in fate. its just one of those things that science cannot, and will never be able to explain.

Kind of like dejavu, eh?

i say yosh!

i reckon eveything is predetermined - even though you still have to make choices, you make the choice fate has already prepared for you :P so you may as well go with flow and do what the fuck you want, because you're going to do it anyway! and if you do something stupid, you're safe in the knowledge that it wasn't your fault and you were meant to do it :P yay!

It's hard to think about fate, but I know god keeps a close eye on me because of my grandparents. I was a medical drop in bootcamp for the marine corps, stayed at boot camp for two extra months, got through training and am stuck in a rehiblitation platoon at camp lejeune for the same thing. I asked god why he put me in this position, but because of me I let some damn fine marines get through the pain and hardships. If I wasn't dropped from training at camp lejeune I would have missed my grandmothers funeral due to my platoon being in the field when it happened. It builds upon you and makes you stronger. People tell me they will never see someone with a bigger heart than mine. I pour my soul into helping And even a fortune cookie I got on Saturday agreed that I'm a helpful person. Fate is on my side even if I have to suffer a little bit.
