1. Do you have directx installed ???
2. Do you have the hardware excelleration on ??

right click on desktop, click on the settings tab, advanced, troubleshoot tab, then make sure it is at full, and Enable write combining is checked.

if this does not help, make sure u have the latest version of your graphics card drive installed...

sounds like the sever u are connecting to is down or u have wrong ip in launcher.
It should connect quite quickly depending on connection speed and host ect

I would check all your connection details
mabey even re-install the client and patch
