Gardening Tips?

I plan on growing something; yeah you know what's up =)
Anyone have any suggestions as to how I would go about constructing a garden within my place of living?
I've been reading a few guides so I have a general understanding of how to go about this, but I want to know personal opinions on the matter like what you recommend for lighting, soil type, harvest times, etc.
