If you upgrade your database 3.5 to 4 (remember I use 2008 SQL and both databases work fine for me) of course will work. You just need a brain for doing that.

The database backend does not affect the data due to T-SQL standards.

Just to point it out, all my databases are built on the MSSQL 2014 server backend, running on Windows Server 2012 R2.
