Whenever I edit either of the constants files the server allows those logged in to remain unhindered.

However as soon as I log out and then back in it stops working.

Modification of the constants.php file in either of the locations stops people from logging onto the server, it gives nothing but a black screen.

I suppose you use notepad or smth like that to edit your files...
Notepad leaves smth in front of <?php , so it doesn't works,
try to use Notepad++, or the Code editor on your host.
Because while uploading it can go wrong aswell....

Most files in all releases are coded with BOM.
Thats was a headache to modify 1 by 1.

Be aware, if u use some special charset (lang_info.cfg), and set other stuff besides UTF-8, u will get some strange chars before all html or will get some php warnings about headers output.

I think nothing more.
