Know about your base/source: Make sure you know what is in your base/source, because you don't want to have "exploits" or random commands that give players 500,000,000 mesos. In your server, when someone asks you a question, such as, "Where do I get blah?", you should reply, "We do not have blah," or "Oh, you get it blah here." When you reply with, "I duno i'll check on it," it'll look like you just leeched that source and started running it, as if you're trying to look like some dumb-ass.
Learn from releases/guides: Always check out the codes when you are adding a release so you understand what things mean. With guides, don't just look for the things that just say, CTRL + F this, then paste this in, that just makes you a leecher. Learn from the guide, and read each sentence. You'll learn your way around your own source much easier instead of asking players on your server about how to add an NPC. It'll make you look very idiotic. Also, make sure you read ALOT of guides. Don't just read one and think your ready.
Learn from your mistakes: When you compile, and you come up with an error, try finding where the error is located at and what might be wrong. I did this many times and I found the solution very easily(sometimes not).
Confused? Ask questions! If you are confused about something, or just want to know something, go to the main section, and ask there. Always search before you post, to refrain people from saying, "lol serch noob," and you could reply, "I did."
Try your own creations: Let's say you read a guide that teaches you how to add NPCs into a map. Read the guide thoroughly, then try it out without looking at the guide. If you really need to look, go ahead, but try to do it without the guide so you get it in your head.
Think about your reputation: Think about it like this... If you wrote an ad looking like this "juin wutevams 2day it bezzt!! xD," do you think people would find that any what interesting and look like it was run by professionals? No. If you think that people will like your server if you download PCMaple and boot it up with no changes at all? No. Do you think that people would like a server where the "coders" can't code at all? Possibly, but I wouldn't. You see, you have to think about that stuff before you start your MapleStory private server so when you actually start it, it'll be a top notch good private server.
Brainstorm: Make sure you always make out some type of game plan for your server. Don't just look through the releases section and say, I want this, and this! THIS! this.. This. THIS, and add the releases in randomly. Say you want this, this, this, before actually developing the server and make a plan about where you'll put it, etc. Also, think of an unused name you like.
Backup: Always keep a back-up of your server and SQL database in-case something goes wrong.
ToS(Terms of Service): Don't waste your time making a ToS then adding in
