So if any of you haven't heard yet, Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for stealing his song, "If I Could Fly" and using in their new hit single, "Viva La Vida."

For all who don't know Joe Satriani is a guitar god, and pretty much whatever he says goes...

Now here is a mash up of the two.

Pretty crazy huh? What's even worse is, "If I Could Fly" was released a year and a half ago... Right around the same time Coldplay was writing their new album. Coldplay has released statements saying that they did not steal anything from Joe. It's true that in the Music Industry you'll eventually step on other people's ground, but that is WAY too close to be coincidence.

This raises some concern about all of the Grammy Nominations that Coldplay received for Viva La Vida, because if this makes it to court, (which it looks like it will) Coldplay will not have a chance in hell at winning, and will probably be stripped of their nominations. This would be a first in history, so be sure to keep an eye on this one.

Here is an article from Pitch Fork Media.

Very suspicious, but this doesn't change my opinion about Coldplay at all.
Coldplay rocks, even if they stole this with purpose.

Thats pretty low for any song writer to swoop. You have to admit it though they sound a how hell lot the same.

Oh well, it happens, you can't really justify someones hard work, then use it for your own.

Coldplay are a good group, but as of this, I've changed my mind.

Wow, the chord progression of the song has been played tons of times. Not defending anybody, but Satriani is going to lose in court.

Actually, you're wrong. Joe has sing song copyrighted. If coldplay meant to steal it or not, it doesn't matter. It's the same progression, which belongs to Joe.

Two this will happen, Coldplay will stop being cocky ass holes and settle this out of court. Or they'll go to court and lose.

...you can't own a chord progression.

Dude... do you have ANY CLUE at all, about SOMETHING in the music industry?!

Of course you can - you call it "copyrights". If Satriani has copyrighted his song, and it contains this chord progression, then this chord progression belongs to Satriani, and there's nothing you can do about it.

Haha thats pathetic everyone steals other peoples music nowadays and just because Coldplay have made it a massive hit Mr Satriani is jealous and wants some of the glory.

It doesn't mean that we all should sit tight and say nothing... either if it's an accident or not, it doesn't matter, Joe did it first, period. I ain't got nothing against Coldplay, but if someone has copyrighted a specific riff before they did, then I don't think they can claim ownership of this riff....

Joe Satriani will win because to people who actually play music it's obvious that Coldplay lifted the chord progression straight from If I Could Fly. The only difference is that instead of a 4, 7, 3, 1 progression, it's a 6, 7, 3, 1 progression. But all in all a 6 and a 4 chord sound pretty much exactly the same. You get the same emotion conveyed when heard.

And for those of you who actually read the article DaCheat posted you'll love this quote.

Both plaintiff and defendant then took baths in enormous pools full of money.

led zeppelin did pretty much the exact same thing with old blues songs throughout their career.

cold play are still a set of prats though.

I've been watching this video about the similar chord progression, and yep Coldplay definetly ripped it. Should make for interesting reading in the daily tabloid newspapers.
