This is a really great mod for HL2.

In this mod you have two sides, each team has a commander who has a top down rts view of the battlefield.
Everyone goes fight and commander directs everyone around the map.
Then the commander places buildings like refineries or barracks or VEHICLE FACTORIES, which are build by team mates (usually engineers).

Then there is research, with enough refineries and resources your commander can research various tanks and weapons.

This game is interesting and has a very great community.

Almost everybody uses a mic/headset.

TIPS:
Dont be a commander if its your first time. (the big butt truck, dont enter it)
If its your first time, chose engineer as your class, also get repair upgrade as your skill.
NEVER EVER go scout, unless you are an amazing awesome uberscout, who will sabotage entire enemy base.
ALWAYS follow your commanders' orders.

Does it cost money to play? I saw it mention Steam and Half-Life 2.

The Orange Box is £12.74,

Select this option if you want to play Empires. You must have Steam installed and have a copy of a Half-Life 2 engine game (Half-Life 2, Episode 1, Orange Box, Counterstrike, Day of Defeat, etc)
or even poorer option of buying individual game like half-life2 episode 1 for £4.49

Sounds like Savage 2.

I have played savage and savage 2, empires mod is way more fun/complicated/involved/epic.

Here are some downloadable map-packs with the most recent maps.
So you dont have download in game and slow down the servers.

im suprised at how well this works, really is worth a try, any1 new to it should give omen a shout, he knows his stuff!

btw read the wiki 1st, it explains the game mechanics

I personally prefer epic games, games that last at least an hour. Balanced team, good teamwork, funny banter on the mic.

exclamation > play more.

P.S. empires mod needs artists, modelers, programmers, and scripters.
If you cant do any of the above, play the game, test custom scripts and maps.
