Pentium 2 and AMD Athlon

I no this is old stuff, it has been bothering me for some time but, why is the Pentium 2 and old Athlon a expansion slot type cpu. What do those chips next to the CPU do??

Why does it use an expansion slot? Well back then expansion slots had a higher bandwidth.

And i can only imagine those chips could eithe rbe the chipset/northbridge/southbridge
