Phrasing

i dont know if im missing something but why would anyone assume 7+7=13?
To keep the answer short, I was supervising a class of chemistry students that could best be described as 'noobs', when one of them came up to me with that text and asked "So 7+7 is not always 14?"

I gave him a relatively long talk about the pH and pOH of water changing with temperature (and thus the pK as well), which he fortunately understood. But the text could definitely have been clearer.

I'm confused, why don't you drink the water instead.
Do you notice how hot water tastes different from cold?
