Hi there i want to upgrade my system but i have some questions

what is better amd or intel
right now i'm hosting a mu server with a intel p4 2.8ghz cpu with HT

but i want to upgrade
i got my eyes set on a cpu/motherboard combo but i dont know if its the way i should go
it has an AMD Athlon 64 6000+ 3.ghz dual core CPU
motherboard i'm to sure i'll have to check but there is several i can choose from
4gb dd2 800mhz ram

i can get this combo for $280 u.s.d

that is what i would like to get BUT
since its with amd 64 bit would i have to get a new 64 bit windows?

and can Mu Servers work on AMD 64 bit?

if i should go with intel could you give me something like i have selected with AMD? or just give me some suggestions

thanks

Don't worry too much if it is an AMD 64 setup - I am currently using an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ @ 2.6GHz setup (dual-core, as X2 implies). I also have WindowsXP, 32 bit, installed.
It more or less means that it can handle 64 bit setups, as it was built with that in mind.

Also, that is a pretty nice upgrade for a server machine. If possible, though, I would up the RAM to 8GB - unless your server is truly dedicated to only Mu Online, and doesn't host a large number of players at any given time (150+?).
Personally, on Half-Life (+mods), I have had seven servers up on a single machine (AMD Athlon 1.1GHz with 1.5GB of DDR memory), running smoothly and without any hiccups, every server peaked with player capacity, on occasion (each holding between 16 and 32 players). That was two years ago. Assuming each server was set to 16 slots instead, you can place the number of people connected to my server machine at 112, all at once.
Of course, I had personally tweaked my machine so absolutely nothing ran other than what was needed for the servers and my games (I played as I hosted). It was also done on WindowsXP SP1 (32 bit, of course).

These days, my machine lags like mad when hosting Gold-Source games (Half-Life+mods)... very likely as a result of the mods I used to host for having made updates that are pushing the engine to its limits, and in turn adding more stress to my machine.
That won't matter anymore in about 40 hours, though - I am placing orders out for a series of parts to build a new developer machine. I intend to stress test it (after OCing the quad-core setup to 3.8GHz, from its default 2.6GHz) with twenty concurrent HLDS stand-alone servers (spreading it across ports 27015-27035), all 32 slot, filled with bots (which stress computers more than actual players).

To the OP -

Depending on how much is your budget. If you like to go with cheap, but good performance, then go with AMD. 790FX & AMD Phenom 9650 is cheap, compared to a P35 Motherboard w/ Intel Core 2 Duo E8400. Intel are for extreme/high performance gaming, like Supreme Commander, while AMD is for normal gaming (Team Fortress 2, Half Life, etc). I'd recommend you to go with Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, to take advantage of the 2 extra cores.

If you're not into gaming, you can get uber cheap computers for server usage etc. Just remember to get a Q6600 rather than dual-cores.

Please smack yourself on the head.
Intel is much better for games atm.
True - if you can afford it. Price/performance, AMD, and its sub-company ATI, have been doing wonders this year. NVidia and Intel should finally start offering decent deals.
I love competition between companies - allows for progress.

Well, i used AMD and I' m a fulltime gamer. I had so many problems with it. 2 Months ago i' ve bought an Intel and not any problem yet..

Good for you, Saint...? Is that fanboism speaking, or just a personal opinion? Either way, it doesn't help budsmoker997.

On which note, I hope he makes a post here soon, to explain where he is at right now with his computer setup.

Both AMD and intel are on par with each other. Thats why both are in business. Hence IBM, Cytrix and VIA out of the picture with CPUS.
